Sinagoga di Siena, Siena

(85+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site
Learn about Siena's Jewish community, past and present, at Sinagoga di Siena. In contrast to the building's beautiful interiors, its facade is strikingly plain due to strict building restrictions in effect during its 1786 construction, which prohibited Jews from building places of worship identifiable from the street. Simply ring the bell to enter and enjoy a guided tour of the history-rich synagogue, where you'll see prayer shawls, Kiddush cups, and centuries-old Torahs on display. Make sure to look up in the neoclassical sanctuary: the Baroque ceiling features an elaborate tablet presenting the Ten Commandments.
