Siena Cathedral, Siena

Immerse yourself in the city's history and art with a visit to Siena Cathedral, considered one of the country's greatest medieval churches. Built in several stages and combining elements of the Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical architectural styles, the cathedral was consecrated in 1215. The building has the form of a Latin cross, featuring a slightly projecting transept, bell tower, and a dome, parts of which were designed by architect Gianlorenzo Bernini. The cathedral is constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with red marble added to the facade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, linked to the black and white horses of the legendary founders of the city, Senius and Aschius. The building also includes a renowned museum of Italian sculpture, displaying works by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. All-inclusive tickets are available online, providing access to the entire cathedral complex, including the terrace above the museum with its views of the city. • It has nothing to envy of Florence, it is a magnificent architectural ensemble. We must arm themselves with patience if travelling in summer, I have been in August, there are to many queue to visit it, prices vary depending on the parties to visit. Siena is a lovely city and its cathedral could not be less.

  • Beautiful Cathedral with its white and blue colors... you first need to queue in front of the Cathedral to buy a pass (different rates according to what you visit: € 7 for the Cathedral and the Piccolomini library, you can then add the crypt, the Baptistery...) then you can admire the Interior of this Cathedral decorated... soil, whether or his sumptuous sculptures...

  • Duomo nice, but unfortunately poorly managed! To figure out where to buy the ticket, it took 20 minutes, as many of the employees hardly damage information. Once you understand (I recommend having the combined ticket from 13 euro), we were a little disappointed in not finding any explanation, even minimal, of what we were seeing. the solution was to spend extra money to take the audioguide. Architecturally it is very nice but undervalued.

  • Beautiful gem of a cathedral right here in Siena. Don't miss this sight if you're in town. Be aware that you are required to buy tickets to visit.
  • Incredible cathedral, must see it. It is worth to pay the ticket for visiting all 5 attractions. Allow at least 2h to see everything.
  • I've seen the reviews, and they all forget to mention the magnificent statues in here. They show such a passion and strong emotions in their faces, they are almost like natural humans. Amazing.
  • The most beautiful cathedral of Italy! You can buy a ticket for the cathedral, or different kind of combo tickets. If you're visiting this cathedral, take your time. It's necessary. When you enter you must not forget to look up and to look down, because the ceiling and the floor is amazing. Everything is beautiful here. Don't forget to visit the "libreria piccolini". It's amazing. You're drawn to the ceiling and the books. But, also here, don't forget to look at the floor. It's beautiful. When you're finished visiting the cathedral, at the gift shop are clean bathrooms. It costs 50 cents. My advise, take your time and you will be amazed!
  • It's cool. The only thing worth seeing in Siena, though. I wouldn't make a trip just for that.

Where to stay in Siena

To enjoy panoramic views of Siena's historical old town, check into a luxury hotel in the city center. If you are looking to escape the activity of the main tourist areas, consider staying at a hostel or guesthouse just outside the central areas. Private multi-room villas in the residential neighborhoods offer landscaped outdoor space and secure parking. For something a little different and considerably less expensive, explore one of many B&Bs in the vineyards and olive groves of Siena's countryside.
