Siena Cathedral, Siena
(4.7/5 based on 7,000+ reviews on the web)
Immerse yourself in the city's history and art with a visit to Siena Cathedral, considered one of the country's greatest medieval churches. Built in several stages and combining elements of the Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical architectural styles, the cathedral was consecrated in 1215. The building has the form of a Latin cross, featuring a slightly projecting transept, bell tower, and a dome, parts of which were designed by architect Gianlorenzo Bernini. The cathedral is constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with red marble added to the facade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, linked to the black and white horses of the legendary founders of the city, Senius and Aschius. The building also includes a renowned museum of Italian sculpture, displaying works by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. All-inclusive tickets are available online, providing access to the entire cathedral complex, including the terrace above the museum with its views of the city. • too bad the entry price (which is really high, even if it follows the seasons). You may want to go on working days (there may be first communions, weddings etc)

  • I visited this place in winter. I tool a train from Firenze and i remember it took approx 1 hour. Although I did not figure out the bus from Siena station to this place, but i could walk. There were long escalators and it made us to move easier.
  • August 1-18, the marble inlays are completely covered and not viewable and the Madonna e bambino in Madonna's chapel is not displayed. To visit only the chapel; go to ticket line 1. To buy the OPA SI Pass Plus, use only lines 2, 3, 4. PAY for the audio guide once inside the chapel. You need the PLUS pass to visit the top of the dome( attention: you have to reserve a time when buying pass).
  • This cathedral is great both inside and out. Everything are so detailed, spectacular mixture of sculpture, paintings, and Gothic architecture. We explored everywhere, even to the attic of the church to see every details. From the roof area, you can see clear the surrounding area.
  • Great cathedral. I would give a better rating if it wasn't for the fact that they charge you 7 euros to go in, and once you're inside you still have to pay off you want to see the multimedia or even for the toilet. Also, the ticket office is inefficient and it will take you a while to get your ticket.
  • Well worth price and wait! Once you see the inside, you'll know why this site is worth 5 stars.
