Immerse yourself in the city's history and art with a visit to Siena Cathedral, considered one of the country's greatest medieval churches. Built in several stages and combining elements of the Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical architectural styles, the cathedral was consecrated in 1215. The building has the form of a Latin cross, featuring a slightly projecting transept, bell tower, and a dome, parts of which were designed by architect Gianlorenzo Bernini. The cathedral is constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with red marble added to the facade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, linked to the black and white horses of the legendary founders of the city, Senius and Aschius. The building also includes a renowned museum of Italian sculpture, displaying works by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. All-inclusive tickets are available online, providing access to the entire cathedral complex, including the terrace above the museum with its views of the city. • 9/27/16 day I scheduled for 10.30 a.m. guided tour along with a friend of mine the beautiful path of the attic of the duomo di Siena. Come to the ticket office in advance we pointed to a meeting point of the guide we waited the 10.35 and the visit was already playing. First problem is not clearly indicated where is the exact location of the meeting place, the rest of the visit a dump everything in a hurry and driving not very courteous. I had already done this route really beautiful with a great guide and carried out to visit with the calm that it would take to fully appreciate the beauty of the view from the roof and the dome from the top I'm sorry but I was really disappointed I wanted to see my friend this walkway unfortunately even he is disappointed. I conclude with the price well 16 euro luckily disabled discount recognized year.

  • The Siena Cathedral is a magnificent cathedral. In the cathedral there are paintings and statues done by the great Italian masters: a huge pulpit made by Pisano, a lovely stained glass window (behind ...  read more »
  • After a couple of visits to the Cathedral, where the floor was partially covered, went on purpose to Siena to admire the magnificent "committed" marble, for which it is famous all over the world (as well as many other artistic wonders: one for all, the Piccolomini library frescoes by Pinturicchio, and overflights). During 5 or 6 centuries numerous famous artists have ventured into composing these unique marble inlay, "paintings" to compose over 50 boxes of various sizes. Unable to describe them here, you have to see them in person, although to appreciate in full, given the presence of barriers, and we should be ... hanging by a few meters high! Among the most impressive panes for beauty and refined composition: the allegory of the Colle della Sapienza by Pinturicchio. the massacre of the innocents, designed by Matteo di Giovanni; the expulsion of Herod by Benvenuto di Giovanni; and then the sacrifice of Jepthah di Neroccio, stories of Moses and the great Hexagon Central compound of Domenico Beccafumi. In short, all wonderful masterpieces for which the cost of the ticket is really nothing in comparison.

  • This cathedral is great both inside and out. Everything are so detailed, spectacular mixture of sculpture, paintings, and Gothic architecture. We explored everywhere, even to the attic of the church to see every details. From the roof area, you can see clear the surrounding area.
  • Porta al cielo is definitely worth the extra. Amazing.
  • One thing you start learning when you go to Italy, there are a lot of amazing Cathedrals, this is no exception! The highlight of this cathedral for me was being able to go all the way up and have a view of the entire city! It was beautiful. You can see the city square from here, which is also huge. It can get pretty packed after 12pm, so I recommend trying to come around 10:30am right when it opens!
  • Beautiful from the interior and exterior, great well -preserved exhibits thoughtyou!
  • Wondrous interiors where every portion bears its own sacred story. If you are travelling by car you can find a park place just outside the old town (safe from ZTL restrictions) and can take the escalators that lead you right to the Duomo. You are charged some 3/4 euros per person as an entry and need to be appropriately dressed. There are however provisions for a shawl to cover yourself in case of need.
