Santa Maria della Scala, Siena

(4.5/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Admire the artwork in Santa Maria della Scala, a former 13th-century hospice-turned-cultural-and-art center. At one time the site mainly drew pilgrims to its doors, but today people flock here for the archeological museum, children's art museum, and contemporary art center, as well as the variety of historical halls and chapels. Kids will enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the archeological section in the basement, displayed along ancient tunnels. For a real visual treat, head upstairs and find the 15th-century frescoes created by Lorenzo Vecchietta, Priamo della Quercia, and Domenico di Bartolo. • Sensational museum and church, which also served as a hospital...beautiful exhibitions of sculpture, paintings and relics of an era long ago, but shouldn't be forgotten. Perfect on a rainy or cold day...  more »
  • Dont miss this. Need 1/2 day to see everything. Has printed information beside each attraction which is very helpful. No audio guide available.  more »
  • All very nice and impressive. The complex is very articulate and you breathe with some suggestion on the recent past of public hospital functioning until a few years ago. I would recommend you dwell on the transit Hall of pilgrims with beautiful frescoes that recall the vocation of the place. There are places where a wise restoration did not take away the testimony of the recent past of "Cacho" hospital with bed Headboards still drawn along the walls. Downstairs there is the Oratory of the night where the low light makes the mysterious environment full of charm. Then you can see also the polychrome marble and some interesting paintings but is the set with his suggestion that cannot be overlooked. It's not over because you can go down and get off again in a run that through an extensive collection of artefacts that the Etruscan tell us about the history of Siena. Also notable is the architectural structure of the site which, I repeat, beyond the merit of individual object must be appreciated and lived in its entirety of secular and religious museum complex.

  • Well constructed and we'll laid out. Various exhibits to see and interact with
  • Excellent exhibition with glorious works of art.
  • This museum is fantastic becouse it was like make a trip in the past. A mix of interactive tools (video and sound) and the original furniture and construction.. And also histirical items makes me understand more about the city of Siena.
  • This is the best curated museum we saw in Italy - including the Vatican, Uffizi, and Pitti Palace. Outstanding collection, thoughtfully presented, creative and informative video elements, interesting blending of ancient and contemporary objects. And you are allowed to explore it at your own pace and in you own way. Thought provoking, incredibly beautiful, and enlightening. Thank you.
  • This is a very emotional and a bit of a sad place. A must visit to understand how people used to live back then
