Santa Maria della Scala, Siena
(4.4/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web)
Admire the artwork in Santa Maria della Scala, a former 13th-century hospice-turned-cultural-and-art center. At one time the site mainly drew pilgrims to its doors, but today people flock here for the archeological museum, children's art museum, and contemporary art center, as well as the variety of historical halls and chapels. Kids will enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the archeological section in the basement, displayed along ancient tunnels. For a real visual treat, head upstairs and find the 15th-century frescoes created by Lorenzo Vecchietta, Priamo della Quercia, and Domenico di Bartolo. • To move any crop a few hours free and alone I am dedicated to the visit of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala, opposite the Cathedral of Siena. Advance for visiting you must have quite a bit of time to spare and good legs, because the path is too long and very interesting. The hotel offers different levels of visit since, in addition to permanent spaces, including an archaeological museum and one dedicated to the history of the city (both in the basement, already great to look at itself), an area devoted to modern art (where I could know the figure of Tito Sarrocchi), Chapel of Saint Catherine, the only original parts of the Fonte Gaia, the Museum of relics and the area once used for Hospital It also hosts temporary exhibitions in a truly impressive. Personally I find it unlikely that a ' ranking ' of the attractions within this site which I would describe as ' magic ', but I found it very interesting and certainly the frescoed once used as a ' Pilgrimage ', through which you can learn about fascinating aspects of medieval and Renaissance life. Beautiful frescoes, and really excellent quality descriptive panels within the entire hotel. I'll go again.

  • Well constructed and we'll laid out. Various exhibits to see and interact with
  • Excellent exhibition with glorious works of art.
  • This museum is fantastic becouse it was like make a trip in the past. A mix of interactive tools (video and sound) and the original furniture and construction.. And also histirical items makes me understand more about the city of Siena.
  • This is the best curated museum we saw in Italy - including the Vatican, Uffizi, and Pitti Palace. Outstanding collection, thoughtfully presented, creative and informative video elements, interesting blending of ancient and contemporary objects. And you are allowed to explore it at your own pace and in you own way. Thought provoking, incredibly beautiful, and enlightening. Thank you.
  • This is a very emotional and a bit of a sad place. A must visit to understand how people used to live back then
