Santa Maria della Scala, Siena

4.5
#2 of 12 in Museums in Siena
Admire the artwork in Santa Maria della Scala, a former 13th-century hospice-turned-cultural-and-art center. At one time the site mainly drew pilgrims to its doors, but today people flock here for the archeological museum, children's art museum, and contemporary art center, as well as the variety of historical halls and chapels. Kids will enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the archeological section in the basement, displayed along ancient tunnels. For a real visual treat, head upstairs and find the 15th-century frescoes created by Lorenzo Vecchietta, Priamo della Quercia, and Domenico di Bartolo. The Church of Santa Maria is wonderful but is very worthwhile to pay to visit the Museum and go to the basement where there is another Museum. Place different and very interesting.

This building was initially a hospital until nearly the modern times, was converted to Museum and in it you can see numerous ancient works. I have to pay to see it. There is a bonus which you can pay for everything (Cathedral, baptistery, this Museum and others) If you have time or pay it individually (more expensive).

This museum reminds me of when, as a child, as a teenager and young man I went to this facility to visit people here admitted, that is, when there was the Hospital of Siena. I can say that over the years the restoration was admirable and there isn't really much to see, to be admired ...

Where to stay in Siena

To enjoy panoramic views of Siena's historical old town, check into a luxury hotel in the city center. If you are looking to escape the activity of the main tourist areas, consider staying at a hostel or guesthouse just outside the central areas. Private multi-room villas in the residential neighborhoods offer landscaped outdoor space and secure parking. For something a little different and considerably less expensive, explore one of many B&Bs in the vineyards and olive groves of Siena's countryside.
