The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. • This is a huge piazza, but due to the high buildings surround it, the good proportion let you feel great in it. The Gothic town hall is a great landmark on one side and there is a beautiful fountain cross the piazza. A great place for people watching.
  • Beautiful plaza. It has a really cool angle where you can experience the different architecture in its fullest. Best way to enjoy it is during dawn and a coffee. Be careful with the coffee shops around there, they do charge a quite extra for the "terrace/outdoors" services.
  • Siena is a must visit destination in Italy.Piazza del campo is the ancient medevial times town square surrounded by red brick buildings with a tower.lot of eateries are there in the square serving the finest Italian cuisine late in the night. • Place where the horse race take place in Siena..theres a lot of caffeterias on the plaza, or the "gelato" :)
  • Beautiful piazza with restaurants on the outskirts and a tall tower on one side. Great place to relax and enjoy the view. If you get there at the right time if year they also do bareback horse racing.
