Piazza del Campo, Siena

The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. • Heart of the city centre, this square is famous throughout the world as theater of the palio di Siena twice a year. Built on a slope in a radial pattern with 9 segments, reminiscent of the nine government in medieval times. The Town Hall and the torre del Mangia tower above the square and frame are the noble palaces built on its circumference. Impressive and worth visiting.

  • We had the day 31/10 well in the days of the witches, the square was occupied with kids and teenagers playing or sitting in groups chatting and having a good time, suddenly the Tortuga the winner of the last Palio of the year parade with drum and their flags through the streets of Siena remembering a samba school drumming. Unforgettable, I don't know how it would be on a normal day more tonight was fantastic.

  • In this cute little Italian plaza, food, gelato, and fun are not limited! During the day, each of the little cafes had great pizza and pasta, some even had gluten free pizza or pasta to offer for my m...  more »

  • Walking down, down, down, into the city center then down the steps into the Piazza del Campo, is awe inspiring. To see these beautiful buildings from the 1300s and the Piazza that came sloping together from 3 villages, is a walk back into Medieval times. Sit on the bricks on the ground of the square or sit around in one of the many cafes around the edge take time to enjoy and imagine the history of what could have happened here. Stroll around in today's world to find plenty of souvenir shops too. Check the calendar of events as this city center still hosts many events.
  • This is one wonderful place to visit. If you manage to find the right bar without any obstructions, you sure will be in for a good view and a wonderful time! This is one of the best places I've been to so far while visiting Tuscany!
  • Charming square with zillions of tourists. You're bound to get a good photo here, but access is somewhat limited to a few avenues. There's a horse race at certain times of the year, with raked seating. A glorious setting.
  • Lovely center square at the very hart of the city. Definitely worth a visit since it still holds the medieval vibe and interestingly the old building is still used today by the major and his staff. Also 2 times a year they hold (July and August) a great and very popular horse race on for which they transform this square into an oval horse track with spectators in the center of it all.
  • The excitement of arriving in Siena was palpable. Finding Piazza del Campo, we stood at the mouth of the archway having ascended down some steep steps to be greeted by this famous space. It is incredible! I can only imagine what it feels like in July during the Palio!!! This place is incredible, and I suggest everybody should put a visit to Siena on their bucket list
