Piazza del Campo, Siena

The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. By accident we were lucky enough to be here everyday after the palio. See the winning contrada celebrate, sing and play cheered me my heart. The square is very nice indeed, situated on 3 hills where lies the city of Siena, represents the beating heart of Sienese life, the evening full of people sitting or lying down to talking, laughing, joking and why not, also looking at the sky.

A beautiful city in Tuscany, well worth a visit, if you go in August you can enjoy a magnificent sight, the Palio. Each year held in mid-August. The Palio of Siena is in Tuscany what Carnival of Venice in Italy, the moment (rather the moments because it is made in two dates) most important city, bringing together thousands and thousands of people who come to see the medieval origin of the Palio horse race takes place on two dates as we have indicated on July 2 with the name of the Palio di Provenzano, in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano, and August 16, known as the Palio of Assunta, which commemorates the Christian feast of the Asunción of María.

Uniquely shaped square half moon, where we run the palio, is difficult to describe it you just have to see it. The buildings that run literally around make it even more special.

  • Perhaps is the most authentic piazza in touristic Italy. The town itself is like time corridor which transports you to medieval times as you walk through the ancient gates of it. Despite the authenticity of the piazza, cafeterias are full of tourists which avoid you fully smell the scent of antiquity.
  • One of the most beautiful cities in earth. It is hard to find a place with so much history, art, culture, traditions and fun. Just relax, savour fine Chianti, and stare at all it offers.
  • I found this place very special. Even it was crowded, atmosphere was very relaxed. There are no cars, so you can sit down and enjoy in sunshine. I saw some people lying down on stone path. You can climb up on tower, and enjoy in beautiful sight. After dynamic visit to Florence, you can come to this square in Siena and relax for a few hours. It's only one hour away from Florence by bus.
  • Interesting and fascinating city. The square is divided into 9 slices, each representing a 'contrada'. Good restaurants surround the square and the atmosphere is suggesting at night. You can enjoy the daylight sitting in the square.
  • This is a must see site if you are visiting Siena. It is certainly as good as the hype and worth spending an hour of your time. Don't forget your camera, there are plenty of shots to be taken from all around the Square. I must be one of the few people that wasn't that impressed with Siena, the the Piazza del Campo and the Duomo are worth a visit.

Where to stay in Siena

To enjoy panoramic views of Siena's historical old town, check into a luxury hotel in the city center. If you are looking to escape the activity of the main tourist areas, consider staying at a hostel or guesthouse just outside the central areas. Private multi-room villas in the residential neighborhoods offer landscaped outdoor space and secure parking. For something a little different and considerably less expensive, explore one of many B&Bs in the vineyards and olive groves of Siena's countryside.
