Piazza del Campo, Siena

Must see · World heritage site · Landmark · Tourist Spot
The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. Make Piazza del Campo a centerpiece of your Siena vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Siena route builder app.

  • If you come to Siena, you have to come see the Palio de Siena in July ( I believe they also have it in August) at the Piazza del Campo . It's magnificent. But even if you don't, the wintertime is...  more »

  • Siena is a wonderful place with style and history. Piazza del Campo is a great place for eating, drinking and watching the world go by. If you're feeling energetic, climb to the top of the tower for views of the surrounding countryside. By Irish standards, Tuscany offers great scenery, terrific wines / food and excellent value. If you haven't been....go now.
  • Wow what an amazing view. The history of this place is amazing, you can see where the horse races took place. The atmosphere is perfect and the people are friendly. The tower is so old but still looks so beautiful. There are plenty of places to eat and drink something.
  • In my opinion the Piazza del Campo is one of the most wonderful places to visit if you are in Tuscany! You can do whatever you want to: take pictures, eat in a restaurant or ever lay down in the middle of the square and just chill. I highly recommend you doing the latter 😉
  • Just WOW! This is a stunning location. The piazza is wide with some wonderful architecture around it. It sits in a slight bowl rather than being flat and there are plenty of places to eat and drink around the edges. I would love to witness one of the horse racing events here, but they weren’t happening at the time of our visit - the atmosphere must be amazing when they do.
  • Great little gem.. Clean and friendly. Antonio was so helpful as was the guy on reception when we were leaving. Parked and picked up our car for 20 euro. Stress free. Great night's sleep right in the centre of Siena.. Highly recommend.
