Piazza del Campo, Siena

(4.8/5 based on 8,500+ reviews on the web)
The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. • And one of the most beautiful squares in Europe with its fascinating palaces that surround it. Unique for its particular and original clamshell shape.

  • Relaxing place to spend an afternoon! Stop running around trying to see everything. Sit, grab a coffee, a spritz, a beer, beverage of choice, some snacks, and relax! Take in the fact that you're in Tuscany. The piazza is beautiful and if you make it there on the right day, there's parades with flag throwing and people dressed in Renaissance clothing.
  • A truly amazing piazza, if not one of the best in Italy. The restaurants surrounding it are surprisingly decent (and not just tourist traps). The tower is also a great place to walk to the top to enjoy the views of Sienna. Overall, the atmosphere of the piazza makes it an unforgettable stop in any Sienna tour/stay.
  • Beautiful scenery, especially when it's warm! Great ice cream shops around. Great to just sit around!
  • A very unique and beautiful piazza. Best way to enjoy is to take a seat and grab a book or a bite and enjoy. Lots of people to watch and lots of site and shops nearby.
  • One of the most amazing places in Italy, piazza is quite unique same as the old city of Siena. Ready enjoyed time spent on piazza.
