Piazza del Campo, Siena

(9,000+ reviews on the web)
Landmark Tourist Spot
The unquestioned heart of the city since the middle of the 12th century, Piazza del Campo was built on the site of a former Roman marketplace. This historic public space is one of Europe's greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and architectural integrity. A twice-yearly horse race, the Palio, has been held around the piazza's edges for several centuries. The square is surrounded by several palaces, the most notable of which was erected in the 13th century as the centerpiece of this shell-shaped space. The piazza's striking pavement, made of red bricks arranged in a fishbone pattern, attracts passing tourists and local students. Most visitors pack around the white marble fountain designed and built by Jacopo della Quercia, a notable sculptor of the Renaissance period. • Perhaps is the most authentic piazza in touristic Italy. The town itself is like time corridor which transports you to medieval times as you walk through the ancient gates of it. Despite the authenticity of the piazza, cafeterias are full of tourists which avoid you fully smell the scent of antiquity.
  • One of the most beautiful cities in earth. It is hard to find a place with so much history, art, culture, traditions and fun. Just relax, savour fine Chianti, and stare at all it offers.
  • I found this place very special. Even it was crowded, atmosphere was very relaxed. There are no cars, so you can sit down and enjoy in sunshine. I saw some people lying down on stone path. You can climb up on tower, and enjoy in beautiful sight. After dynamic visit to Florence, you can come to this square in Siena and relax for a few hours. It's only one hour away from Florence by bus.
  • Interesting and fascinating city. The square is divided into 9 slices, each representing a 'contrada'. Good restaurants surround the square and the atmosphere is suggesting at night. You can enjoy the daylight sitting in the square.
  • This is a must see site if you are visiting Siena. It is certainly as good as the hype and worth spending an hour of your time. Don't forget your camera, there are plenty of shots to be taken from all around the Square. I must be one of the few people that wasn't that impressed with Siena, the the Piazza del Campo and the Duomo are worth a visit.
