Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana, Siena

4.7
#2 of 12 in Museums in Siena
Immerse yourself in some of Italy's most significant works of art at Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana. The gallery features a collection of works from the Duomo, including the main altarpiece and a piece of stained glass. Climb up 130 stairs to the panorama viewpoint for what is arguably the best view of Siena. Be warned that the stairs to the top are small and winding, so not suitable for all visitors. Also, only 30 are allowed up at a time, so lines may form--don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit. Upon entering this museum you have the option of purchasing a ticket solely for entry here, or a combination ticket which also includes the crypts, baptisery, and panoramic viewpoint. Using our world travel planner, Siena attractions like Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • This in combination with the duomo, and just the view from the roof is very rewarding and gives wonderful photo opportunities.

  • Part of the overall ticket package together with the Duomo and other sights, we weren't planning on visiting it prior to buying tickets, but were delighted by the wonderful collection of the art.  more »
  • Siena is a city, like all Italian art cities, beautiful and enchanting ... for us Italians. but when you see that things are organized ... to get YOU Pass you have to make a row of at least 30 minutes only to access. unless you pay a 1 euro to skip the line! SHAME the pass that we did was to 13 euros to visit Cathedral, Piccolomini Library, baptistery, crypt and Museum ... The Cathedral opens at 13.30 and get an interminable row under the Sun only to see you pull out in front of people who skip the line! SHAME the maximum we touched the Museum are works by Duccio di Boninsegna. isn't there a tag that explains the title, year, no nothing ... We are witnessing a pathetic scene: Anglo-Saxon visitor asks the title of Majesty: the mask replies: go to the bookshop and buy the guide or 2 euros for the explanation from totem (2000 years old and still fixed and with 2 headphones) SHAME! I'll stop there ... don't give up though to visit Siena

Where to stay in Siena

To enjoy panoramic views of Siena's historical old town, check into a luxury hotel in the city center. If you are looking to escape the activity of the main tourist areas, consider staying at a hostel or guesthouse just outside the central areas. Private multi-room villas in the residential neighborhoods offer landscaped outdoor space and secure parking. For something a little different and considerably less expensive, explore one of many B&Bs in the vineyards and olive groves of Siena's countryside.
