Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana, Siena

(4.5/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Immerse yourself in some of Italy's most significant works of art at Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana. The gallery features a collection of works from the Duomo, including the main altarpiece and a piece of stained glass. Climb up 130 stairs to the panorama viewpoint for what is arguably the best view of Siena. Be warned that the stairs to the top are small and winding, so not suitable for all visitors. Also, only 30 are allowed up at a time, so lines may form--don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit. Upon entering this museum you have the option of purchasing a ticket solely for entry here, or a combination ticket which also includes the crypts, baptisery, and panoramic viewpoint. • Well preserved Museum within the work of the Cathedral. These paintings, statues, old texts, relics various diocesan and other memorabilia. Striking some of the rooms, well researched as both shows I like lights. I recommend having the ticket "OPA is PASS" by value of € 8 (€ 12 from 1° of March), which includes the entrance to the Cathedral, Piccolomini library, Baptistery, crypt, Museo dell'Opera, Facciatone.

  • Adjacent to the Cathedral of Siena, "Cathedral Museum". By using the extension, resulted in the unfinished Cathedral, founded in 1870. The stained-glass Windows by Duccio adorned the façade of the Cathedral on the first floor drawing and Giovanni Pisano's marble sculptures are exhibited. It is rather than protruding in front neck which statues are a little awkward appearance, but these were on the ground, we looked down from the height of several tens of meters. Here one of the best is a special room on the second floor. It is a Duccio of Siena's greatest treasures "of the magnificent Madonna (Maestà). This picture is 1,260 years, versus one assigns the city of Siena, 1308, Duccio to celebrate the 50th anniversary from the miraculous victory at the battle of montaperti, Florence, he spent 32 months and has completed in 1311. The Museum's narrow stairs up, further Observatory was made into the new Cathedral is raised once again overlooks all the town of Siena, just spectacular. A tired town of Siena, lined the walls and roofs of Piazza del Campo's Torre del Mangia Tower and the mid-field and can grasp the complete picture of the Cathedral from here too, didn't know from the ground, because the view.

  • Obviously the adjacent churches museums are not so appealing, at least is my opinion.

  • Excellent illustration with the audio guide. Send somebody straight to the top floor to start queuing for your visit to the top (grande façade). Be careful though, no cellular service in many parts of the museum. 1st floor is the winner in this museum. Be sure to get audio guide
  • Overly complex ticket options and surprising lack of labels/signage inside this multi level museum let down what could be a more educational experience
  • A good place to see Siena from above.
  • Good place for historic object display & knowledge
  • Outstanding collection.
