Complesso Museale Santa Maria della Scala, Siena

#2 of 20 in Museums in Siena
Admire the artwork in Complesso Museale Santa Maria della Scala, a former 13th-century hospice-turned-cultural-and-art center. At one time the site mainly drew pilgrims to its doors, but today people flock here for the archeological museum, children's art museum, and contemporary art center, as well as the variety of historical halls and chapels. Kids will enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the archeological section in the basement, displayed along ancient tunnels. For a real visual treat, head upstairs and find the 15th-century frescoes created by Lorenzo Vecchietta, Priamo della Quercia, and Domenico di Bartolo. • I visited Santa Maria della Scala as this museum is included in the complex ticket along with the Museo Civico and the tower (the complex ticket costs 20 euros), but it is not in the main square, but opposite the cathedral. It's a pity that I didn't read anything about this particular museum in advance, because it wasn't actually part of my plans. But I didn't regret that I visited. An unprepared viewer like me will first get lost in the labyrinth of halls and passages, and then suddenly go into the hall, fully painted with frescoes, telling about the history of the hospital's foundation and "stages of a long journey." Until you find this hall (on the diagram it is hall number 4), do not rush to the exit. The frescoes are in excellent condition.

  • If you are interested in history, architecture, archaeology or art, Santa Maria della Scala is the place you want to visit. It used to be one of the Europe's first hospitals taking care of abandoned c...  more »
  • The museum branches on several levels with an offer the exhibits variable, however that citizen and the archaeological one are kept in very bad conditions, being under the former catacombs or cisterns (very scenic), are kept the lights very low, while giving a Sense of restlessness, especially if you are the only visitors, but above all you do not see anything because the exhibits are all in the shade.

  • We just loved it here and with all the lovely things to see it was certainly worth our while. So much to see in Siena but put this one on your list. Wonderful. Take your time to explore every nook and cranny as some of the nicest things are a little out of the way. Wheelchair and kid friendly.
  • We decided to get the full OPA Pass + to see the historic sites in Siena. Santa Maria Della Scala was far and away the most interesting. It hides layers of rooms filled with information and art that descend three floors down now the city. We spent almost an hour and a half listening to the audio guide (included with the price) describe the history of the hospital.
  • Love the contrasting layers of the stone construction. There's a minor fees to enter. Now a museum, it was once an important civic hospital dedicated to caring for abandoned children, the poor, the sick, and pilgrims.
  • Definitely underrated compacted to the cathedral and town hall. The temporary exhibition was definitely worth the visit.
  • In front of the Cathedral of Siena, this structure houses three museums. It is a beautiful structure that acted as a hospital and provided shelter to pilgrims traveling through Siena. Definitely recommended.
