Library Traveler Resource
Biblioteca Piccolomini is perhaps the most elaborate room of the Siena Cathedral. Pope Pius III commissioned the library in the early 16th century to house the valuable book collection of his deceased uncle, Pope Pius II. Walk through the carved marble entrance to see the brightly colored frescoes that cover the walls. These tell the story of Pope Pius II's life. You can study them to learn about one of Siena's most treasured sons. In the middle of the room, admire the famous Three Graces statue, a third-century Roman copy of the Greek original. Biblioteca Piccolomini is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Siena Edition.

Where to stay in Siena

To enjoy panoramic views of Siena's historical old town, check into a luxury hotel in the city center. If you are looking to escape the activity of the main tourist areas, consider staying at a hostel or guesthouse just outside the central areas. Private multi-room villas in the residential neighborhoods offer landscaped outdoor space and secure parking. For something a little different and considerably less expensive, explore one of many B&Bs in the vineyards and olive groves of Siena's countryside.

  • Amazing frescoes, ceilings and illustrated sheet music. The church itself is worth the four Euro entry, but four me this room was the highlight and worth entry by itself.  more »
  • It is only one room accessible while in the Siena Cathedral but packed with the most amazing paintings and huge books. Don't forget to look up!  more »
  • This alone is worth the entry fee to the Duomo. Try not to go in a tour, otherwise you'll get hustled through here too quickly when you really want to spend more time looking at everything.  more »

  • Speechless is located inside the Abbey, it is impossible not to see. It's true that it's a bookstore, but books are certainly not the highlight. There are beautiful paintings and sculptures, Pinturicchio and Raffaello Sanzio (in a painting you are their 2 self-portraits) ... There's a tremendous light. If you go to Abbey don't forget the piccolomini library!

  • The frescoes in the library are impressive. Not to lose detail. We go to the Duomo and special input is not required.

  • The Renaissance frescoes by Pinturicchio are a true wonder. Inside you can also appreciate many ancient musical volumes.

  • Beautiful library. Ideal for those who, like me, loves the ancient manuscripts, richly illustrated with unique designs.

  • My mother is incredible. Yes are some days in Florence I greatly recommend visit to Siena and notably its Cathedral. The mere site where is the library is amazing, since it boasts works by Miguel Ángel, Bernini, Donatello, and is library that helped Rafael is perhaps the most beautiful site. It costs 2 euros apart from the entrance to the Cathedral, but you simply must go. The place was almost empty at this time (early December) and the experience was very intimate with the beautiful walls filled with frescoes and ceiling that is unmatched, comparable perhaps only to the Sistine Chapel. I recommend it above way.
