Biblioteca Piccolomini, Siena

(4.9/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Biblioteca Piccolomini is perhaps the most elaborate room of the Siena Cathedral. Pope Pius III commissioned the library in the early 16th century to house the valuable book collection of his deceased uncle, Pope Pius II. Walk through the carved marble entrance to see the brightly colored frescoes that cover the walls. These tell the story of Pope Pius II's life. You can study them to learn about one of Siena's most treasured sons. In the middle of the room, admire the famous Three Graces statue, a third-century Roman copy of the Greek original. Biblioteca Piccolomini is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Siena Edition.

  • on a visit to the Duomo di Siena, we entered also in the Piccolomini library, part of the monumental complex. Surprisingly, we found ourselves in the middle of a lesson in technique of applying gold leaf on paper carrier. Very impressive!

  • It is an environment that is on the left of the nave of the Cathedral, obviously keeps very old books but just look up on the ceiling to be wowed. The touch of Pinturicchio, Aspertini, Raphael and others is outstanding. Really to visit, to stay really amazed!
