Biblioteca Piccolomini, Siena

(4.9/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Biblioteca Piccolomini is perhaps the most elaborate room of the Siena Cathedral. Pope Pius III commissioned the library in the early 16th century to house the valuable book collection of his deceased uncle, Pope Pius II. Walk through the carved marble entrance to see the brightly colored frescoes that cover the walls. These tell the story of Pope Pius II's life. You can study them to learn about one of Siena's most treasured sons. In the middle of the room, admire the famous Three Graces statue, a third-century Roman copy of the Greek original. Biblioteca Piccolomini is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Siena Edition.

  • Located in the same building as the duomo, is completely painted with beautiful colors and keeps of medieval books that it's worth it. Only drawback is that the guides are not allowed to enter.

  • The Renaissance frescoes by Pinturicchio are a true wonder. Inside you can also appreciate many ancient musical volumes.

  • Beautiful library. Ideal for those who, like me, loves the ancient manuscripts, richly illustrated with unique designs.

  • My mother is incredible. Yes are some days in Florence I greatly recommend visit to Siena and notably its Cathedral. The mere site where is the library is amazing, since it boasts works by Miguel Ángel, Bernini, Donatello, and is library that helped Rafael is perhaps the most beautiful site. It costs 2 euros apart from the entrance to the Cathedral, but you simply must go. The place was almost empty at this time (early December) and the experience was very intimate with the beautiful walls filled with frescoes and ceiling that is unmatched, comparable perhaps only to the Sistine Chapel. I recommend it above way.
