Archivio di Stato, Siena
(4.7/5 based on 40 reviews on the web)
Browse old documents and see how medieval binders used painted leather and wooden covers to hold them together at Archivio di Stato, one of Siena's lesser-known tourist attractions. Ranking among the richest archives in Italy, this site houses records from the 8th century to the present day. Established in 1775, the collection includes about 60,000 documents relating to the judicial and financial administration of the city. Look for illuminated letters and books written in local dialects. For an added bonus, step onto the building's narrow balcony to enjoy unobstructed views of the city's main public square. • One of the collections that best inform you about the city of Siena and her past lives is that of Biccherne. The collection is housed at the State Archives of Siena and it can be visited during the opening hours of the offices. Includes 107 from 1258 and are the covers of the financial records of the judiciary of the commune of Siena. These covers were painted and illuminated by important artists of the time and/or are really beautiful. The visit lasts about one hour and is completely free-

  • The State archive of Siena is located within the prestigious palazzo Piccolomini (Banchi di Sotto corner Via Rinaldini) with the Windows overlooking the stunning piazza del Campo. The archive maintains extensive documentation that allows you to trace the history of Siena through the centuries, from the middle ages to the present. At the archive is permanently exhibited the collection of the tablets of the Biccherna, which is accompanied by a documentary exhibition. The exhibition area is open every weekday, Monday to Saturday; visitors are accompanied in their visit by custodial personnel units of the archive. Admission is free. The collection of Biccherne is exposed in full: 105 boards from 1258 in the early 18th century. Biccherna tablets are the covers of the most important and ancient registers of Directors of judiciary of Sienna, the Biccherna. Biccherna officers on these covers from 1257 began to make paintings. The tablets were commissioned later by other magistrates of Siena: the gabelle, the consistory, the communal Treasury, administration of Formwork and fortresses, as well as from various citizens: the hospital s. Maria della Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the society of St. John the Baptist of death.

  • After some searching, we found the entrance to the museo dell ' Archivio di Stato. On the 4 floor (stairs) we reported us for a tour at 10:30 am. However, we were alone. So we got a private tour in Italian. The almost 100 painted wood tablets (13 century) on the covers from tax and registration books of Siena are unique in the world. The "biccherne" are exhibited in the first areas. Then the evolution to real paintings for 4 centuries in these rooms. Also a wonderful meeting room. Apotheosis was the view of the Piazza del Campo. Gorgeous!
