Almost entirely destroyed the Magyars in 899 and rebuilt some 50 years later, the Abbey increased his power not only on the religious level, but also civil, enough to take on the appearance of a medieval castle with its defence system formed by towers and moats. With diploma of 967, Otto I donated to the Patriarchate of Aquileia Sixth Abbey that later, in 1420, came under the domination of the Venetian Republic that entrusted, in 1441.
