  • Amazing jewel of our artistic heritage. Located in an area rich in waters that flow around presents a monumental structure of big effect. Inside a vast series of frescoes dating back to several centuries ago. We were there for an organ concert and I have to say that I got tired of admiring the entire complex that it's really worth to employ some time to inspect it.

  • This ancient Benedictine Abbey, whose Foundation dates back to the Lombard era, still has the defensive structure that had been given during the middle ages. Access to the complex is through a stone bridge and the so-called torre grimana with beautiful frescoes. Inside, in piazza Castello, you can admire, from left to right, the old Chancery abbaziale, the Watchtower (now Bell), the entrance to the Church and the Renaissance palace, residence of the Abbots. In the vestibule of the Church it is immediately captivated by the beautiful frescoes, depicting the antithesis between heaven and hell, made by Anthony of Florence, at the beginning of the sixteenth century. However, it is within the Church which remains the most important pictorial cycle and significant: in the presbytery, in fact, there are frescoes of the Giotto school, with scenes from the life of Mary, Jesus, St. Peter and St. Benedict. Fine workmanship the representation of lignum vitae, the tree Mystic, iconographic point of view is closer to the Franciscans that the Benedictines. The crypt houses the Saint Anastasia's URN, marble, an Annunciation of the Lombard period of the 14th century, where some critics see the first plastic depiction of the city of Portsmouth, and a fifteenth-century Vesperbild. There are many other artworks preserved in this Abbey: for this reason we recommend to those who have the opportunity, to come back many times to visit her, because with each new visit will discover something new or unexpected.
