The Cathedral was built in the 12th century it is said on the ruins of a temple dedicated to the goddess Cybele. Its ground plan is a Basilica with Romanesque style and is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. In the 13th century assumed that Gothic appearance that today we can still admire probably thanks to the intervention of architects Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Fossanova. The Church is externally with a belfry, powerful and solemn, sticking out on the left corner of the façade and is also linked to Romanesque architecture. The main entrance is placed in the context of a Gothic porch to two arches both pointed and covered by a vault supported by beautiful marble columns. In the Lunette of the portal there is a fresco dating from the first half of the 15th century depicting the Virgin and child with Saints Peter and Peter's Epafrodite Colaberti da Piperno and Christ between four angels. The Interior is typically Romanesque cross-vaulted aisles consist of pointed Gothic arches. The choir has a square apse (but originally semi-circular), is surrounded by chapels frescoed two panes and has three depict episodes in the history of Mary and one the appearance of Christ to the Apostles after his resurrection. Among the most important works that are placed inside the Church: the chapel De Marchis, it is possible to admire the altarpiece of the Madonna of the angels attributed to young Benozzo Gozzoli and dating to 1452 meters, the nursing Madonna child with Saints Anne and Joachim dating to a painter of the Neapolitan school sixteenth century fresco depicting the last judgment 15th century and located on the inside wall of the entrance. Of great interest is also the 15th century wooden crucifix in the chapel of the Magi and the statue of our Lady of Victory inside the chapel.

A real treasure trove of art. Hits since the entry. A magical atmosphere of recollection that idea of the middle ages.

Important architecture that reflects the Cistercian style of the nearby Abbey of Fossanova, where you can admire the splendid table with the altarpiece with the Virgin of the angels attributed to young Benozzo Gozzoli, 1452 dated to about. To his left is also 15th century crucifix magnifico. The rest of the Church contains several artworks of more or less valuable, but these two are without doubt the most representative. Don't miss it if you go to Sermoneta
