Abbazia di Valvisciolo, Sermoneta

Valvisciolo Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in the province of Latina, central Italy, near the towns of Sermoneta and Ninfa. It is an example of rigorous Romanesque-Cistercian architecture, considered a masterpiece of that style in central Italy second only to the nearby Fossanova Abbey.HistoryAccording to tradition, the abbey was founded in the 8th century by Greek Basilian monks. It was occupied and restored by the Knights Templar in the 13th century, who after the dissolution of their order were replaced by the Cistercians in 1312-15. The monastery was dissolved in 1807 but was re-settled in 1864 and is still extant.According to a medieval legend, when the Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay was burnt at the stake in 1314, the church's architraves broke. The Templar influence can be still noticed today from several crosses with their characteristic shape, such as that in the rose window. During a restoration, a Templar palindromic Sator Square was discovered on a wall: it is the only known variant in which the letters form five concentric rings, each one divided into five sectors.

  • Doesn't take long to visit. Great panoramic view outside, pretty church and fabulous cloisters. Great place to take in ahead of visiting Sermoneta or on your way out. Loads of parking in the shade and...  more »
  • Once again the hinterland of Latina surprises! Sermoneta is a medieval town rich of history and beauty that also points to the renowned principal beautiful Tuscan villages. From the entrance to the town are arches and stone walls, narrow streets with quaint houses and churches. There's also the Gothic Cathedral without any subsequent architectural contaminations. Wide and varied food very nicely. At the top of the village lies the Castello dei Caetani, visited and in excellent condition considering its seniority. The visit is guided and surcharge, the ticket price is worth it all! You visit the tower to the yard, from rags to kitchens, passing through the living spaces all still furnished and painted. Especially bedroom furniture has all original of 1450. Outstanding! From the castle walls and the tower you can enjoy a breathtaking view as far as the eye across the Valley that when is clear up to see the coast. Summer music courses are also held in the Castle and music concerts. Just outside of the village there is the Abbey of Valvisciole not very big but nice and very well preserved, with its cloister and a panoramic square where you can admire also the hill with the village and the Castle at the top. A beautiful trip!

  • Go early in the morning, you can enjoy the silence and gather in meditation, not losing to admire the magnificent cloister and the chapel of San Lorenzo of the bottom of the left aisle, with frescoes by Pomarancio (1586-89), where the same artist's self-portrait. I challenge you to recognize it! Also of interest is the Museum and the little store by selling essences made by monks. Beautiful place and not to be missed!

  • Luca is too good for this.
  • A beautiful Abbey next to the gardens of Ninfa. To visit, beyond the Church, even a beautiful cloister named after St Benedict. Very interesting history of this Abbey linked to the Knights Templar. Also a small religious goods store.

  • A magical place. Deeply spiritual. Conveys a sense of a time long ago and never passed. I recommend it not only to fans. Is a place of peace and meditation.

  • Is beautiful ... then you can buy the typical products of the friars. Getting married in this Abbey you need to book months ahead and it is very expensive.
