Cascate del Mulino, Saturnia

4.5
#1 of 535 in Parks in Tuscany
Plunge into Cascate del Mulino, a natural thermal bath located in a spa town that has been inhabited since ancient times. At this location, 800 l (211 gal) of water gush into a large natural pond every second, flowing over a waterfall and down a series of natural pools carved into the rock. The water is comfortably warm at about 37 C (98.6 F), and is said to possess healing properties exploited since before the Roman era. Though the water is believed to be healthy, it also smells a bit like eggs because of its high sulfur content, so don’t wear your best swimsuit. There are no real tourist facilities here, so bring your own towel, slippers, and bathrobe, as well as some drinking water and a light snack. Cascate del Mulino is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

  • I arrived there in mid-August in full day. it was extremely hot. the parking lot is large but it was full. there is only an old terrace that had a toilet where there was a large row to be expected. he was the only one in the area otherwise. it is true that it is a place where you pay neither parking nor entrance but I would prefer to pay and have civilized toilets, an umbrella for a little shade. you actually had nowhere to sit in the shade. after making a 2 hour hike on the streamers and after seeing the net we expected something else entirely. I took a bath that lasted 10 minutes. the water was very hot outside terribly hot. Unfortunately, the place could be beautifully arranged. You can get here in the winter to see something to enjoy the scenery.
  • This place is advertised as Saturnia in some places. Saturnia is actually a thermal spa you pay for and if you put “Saturnia” into your GPS you will struggle finding it. So based on pictures we were very interested in visiting this place so we drove 2 hours to get here and actually spent less than an hour. I did not feel it was worth a 2 hour drive compared to all the other places we visited. The good: Stunning little place, nice powerful waterfall. Advise: come prepared- lots of people, if you don’t get a place near the shaded areas bring an umbrella. Bring water shoes as walking on those stones can be painful. Do not bring kids especially if they are fussy... better as an adult chill zone rather than for kids. What was especially off putting were some tiny red worms that are alive and in the water...they are everywhere but a google search seems to indicate that they are harmless. I still wasn’t keen on going back in after seeing the worms Whilst it was worth seeing driving 2 hours was not a good idea unless we had planned to see something else. The base of the waterfall has a lot of people struggling to get a position. I think it’s 3.5 stars. Worth seeing if you are nearby
  • Nice place. Free parking, bar open till 11PM. Pleasant thermal water. But TOO MUCH CROWDED from the early morning. Really nice in the evening/night, where one can appreciate the thermal excursion from the 36°C of the water and the fresher breeze outside.
  • Wonderful place to enjoy the natural warm water. Lots of people but for a place that is free and used by so many people it was clean. Plenty of little places to sit in the water falls. Be careful with entering the parking....there is a signal for the 1-way road. Also be sure to bring your water shoes, your umbrella and something soft to sit or lay on.
  • HUMAN SOUP but it's amazing. the main falls are warm and powerful. you'll need swimming shoes or plastic shoes to wear in the water. not that hot. only drawback is the crazy Italian system of people getting out of cars to claim spots in the packed car park. I had none of it. sorry not sorry
