  • The Tower of St. John dominates the archaeological site of Tharros and takes its name from the nearby medieval church of San Giovanni di Sinis. It is one of the most impressive towers of the Gulf and dominates both sides and landings of the Sinis peninsula. The tower is high, terrace including, ben 11 metres; a curious element about the thickness of the wall, equal to 4 meters. In my visit to Tharros, the Tower of San Giovanni is the element of the archaeological site of Tharros that I liked more, especially for the view you can enjoy from the terrace at the top. For it is necessary to obtain a ticket, which is equal to 3 euros just for the Tower, but if you are also interested to the ruins of Tharros you can buy a combined ticket for both by 6 euros. Once at the top, superb is the view of Capo San Marco and the Sinis peninsula and surrounding beaches lapped by the sea and windswept.

  • Phoenician and then Roman settlement before the end of the peninsula of Sinis. Essentially ruins of the Roman settlement on a square plan. Spectacular site, quite busy, avoid preferably during the hottest

  • Tharros was founded by the Phoenicians near the pre-existing nuraghic village. The Phoenicians traded their goods against salt and materials first which was rich Sardinia and the nuraghic civilization used (especially bronze). The peninsula of capo San Marco in the Gulf of Oristano lent itself particularly for the creation of a city; It is a natural harbor. When the boats crossed the Capo San Marco the temple dedicated to Baal turned in front of them. The city fell into the hands of the Romans as a result of the Punic Wars. The temple was destroyed and replaced by a temple dedicated to a Roman deity.

  • It's a nice place. Not loads to do, but it's worth visiting for a couple of hours. Interesting history but if you're used to seeing ruins such as Pompeii or Agrigento, then you might be a bit disappointed.

  • Extremely important Phoenician site.
