Gennargentu Mountains, Sardinia

4.8
#28 of 36 in Nature in Sardinia
Gennargentu is a large massif in central-southern Sardinia, Italy, encompassing the provinces of Nuoro and Ogliastra. It includes the highest peaks on the island, such as Punta La Marmora (1,834 m), Monte Spada (1,595 m), Punta Erba Irdes (1,676 m), Bruncu Spina (1,829 m) and Punta Paulinu (1,792 m).The range forms part of the Gennargentu National Park. Geologically, its rocks are amongst the oldest in Europe, and are therefore smooth shaped: rock types include schist, limestone and granite.ToponymyThe etymology of the name Gennargentu isn't attested, it could mean Door of Silver, Door of the Winds or Door of absinthium.Ski ResortsThe mountains are home to the only ski resorts on the island: on Monte Spada, Bruncu Spina, Separadorgiu and S'Arena.

Place surrounded by nature where you can still breathe the air of a time, nature is the host and the roads are great to go in motion, surrounded by greenery and animals pasturing cheeses. Not to be missed.

During my stay in Ogliastra, it seemed only right to devote a visit to Gennargentu, place that even in the name do not properly evokes a tourist attraction, but rather a name to memorize for the integration of geography. But right here, away from the coast, crowded by tourists, you discover the very heart of Sardinia: mountains, endless valleys, springs, the herds and flocks to pasture. The path that I took part from Grass Birdes (destination S'arena accessible by car from the road between Desulo and Fonni) and through nearly seven km leads to punta Lamarmora. The trail is well marked, but it would still be appropriate to obtain a map. The path is not particularly difficult, but considering the long, steep slopes and uneven in some parts, I would recommend it only to trained people or otherwise used the mountain. Otherwise you may not enjoy the magnificent vistas that open onto the path.

Visited for the first time yesterday after returning from a trip to Perda Liana. I was fascinated and entranced by the unspoilt nature of Gennargentu. I was lucky enough to turn an off road vehicle for many kilometres and the feeling of freedom that you breathe is inimitable. I can't wait to go back. Loved it!
