  • Recently I went to visit Santa Margherita Belice, a Sicilian village (situated in the province of Agrigento) known for the cultivation of prickly pear, for the production of cheeses such as ricotta, vastedda primosale, jams made hand made with local fruit. As soon as you arrive at piazza Matteotti you see this big road with beautiful palaces that follow one after another. Several have been rebuilt or restored after severe damage suffered as a result of the earthquake of 1968. On the right you will immediately notice the majestic palazzo Filangeri di Cutò and wonderful. Outside there is a bronze statue in natural size depicting Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the author of the famous novel "the Leopard". Upon entering there is a huge courtyard and on the right leads to the Palace. Inside on the left there is a bar where you will find two very nice gentlemen. You have to turn to them to visit the Museum on the upper floor of the Leopard and Cera. Also you can buy souvenirs on Leopard or typical local products of this country. Our tour guide (the lady who sits down at the bar) escorted us upstairs. Along the scale on the walls there are paintings depicting scenes of Luchino Visconti's film "the Leopard" based on the novel. The images are very impressive. As soon as you arrive upstairs you can see glass showcases containing books, documents. Continuing in the next room there is the Museum of the Leopard. At the four corners of the room there are four amazing dresses of ladies of the 800 's, not the authentic ones of the movie (the originals are found in Rome), but are made very well. There are plenty of photographs depicting the life of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, are old pictures very nice. There is the writer's family tree. In addition, there are numerous showcases with inside pages of the original manuscript of the novel of the author with the novel typescript. The room has a silk curtain and lace and the walls are hung with red. Continuing in the next room there is the wax museum. Sicilian ceramic floors, the walls of the room are ivory as the curtain valance. There are sofas upholstered in Damascus and then there are some very beautiful paintings. But what is striking is the wax figures depicting some characters in the novel (Angelica, Tancredi, Prince Fabrizio, count Chevallier and the dog Bendicò). Recommend visiting this Palace because it looks very interesting. Finally our guide told us that the rooms were rebuilt because of damage caused by an earthquake in 1968.
