  • Peter and Paul Abbey of Viboldone news Via dell'abbazia 7 20098 San Giuliano Milanese Milan T39 02 9841203 Incipit: to increase the appetite before dinner at Antica Osteria La Rampina, I visited the Abbey of Viboldone. I ask, as always, when I start to convey something about TripAdvisor understanding to readers who will read my notes if in any subject or form of expression I will use "copy and paste". No doubt you will read some more complete description of my, but I felt the pleasure of telling my personal emotions when visiting this Abbey founded in 1176 by some monks cenobites § 1 and completed in 1348 by Humiliated § 2. These abbeys, unfrequented by milanesi, deserve a visit a deep meditation where silence invites to a meditation that only our hearts are able to perceive, are places where you can still breathe the spirituality that hopelessly lies disapearing. The most visited as Chiaravalle and Morimondo don't miss those of: San Lorenzo in Monluè, Viboldone, Santa Maria in Calvenzano, Mirasole and San Pietro in Gessate. Each of these abbeys has much to tell about medieval art over find some spiritual peace when you decide to visit them. Always with pleasure to make historic visit to one of these faithful 7 abbeys in Milan, I took the opportunity to note news to readers of TripAdvisor also of this Abbey. Peter and Paul Abbey of Viboldone for the beauty of its architecture, its history and its frescoes is part of the most important medieval complex of Lombardy. Natural in its substantial structure, the Abbey of Viboldone is defined by the old residents "Lady of silence and rot" is inserted in the green countryside of Lombardy on a ridge that rises slightly to the Northeast. Gothic style complex built in the middle ages in the pieve, situated on the road from Milano porta in Lodi. The municipality of Viboldone in my dialect of Milan Viboldon who over the years has had a broad economic development by taking the name of San Giuliano Milanese remained a small fraction viboldonese around its ancient Abbey. From the original monastic remains, to prove its important life, only the Priori Palace located on the left side of the Church. The history of the Abbey for what little I remember or read began with a massive and impressive intervention that a congregation of monks cenobites starting dal1176 dedicated to drain wetlands and woodland making them productive. The result of the work allowed this collective undertaking a slow and difficult construction of their project of the farmhouse/monastery. Completed by the order of the humiliati in 1348 this closed court with the monastic buildings and agricultural irrigation permanent meadows and surrounded by rustic from arable to form a § 3Grange, still well visible. This religious order formed by monks, nuns and lay people who, around the present Church, led a life of prayer and hard work, especially manufacturing wool cloth and cultivating fields with innovative machining systems. Upon entering, you can notice in the Lunette above the portal of white marble sculpture of the Madonna and child between St Ambrose and Bernard of Clairvaux and flanked by two niches containing statues of St Peter and St Paul. Crossing the threshold to enter inside the church there is a low mezzanine floor door to the right of the door, so as to prevent animals present who beccheggiavano in the square to enter the Church. Immediately inside we can observe and admire several remarkable frescoes of the Giotto school lately and carefully restored to their beauty. The earliest frescoes were uncovered in the mid-19th century and early 20th century and only thirty years after they were freed from the walls ' plaster covering. The task of retrieving all the frescoes, mostly once faded, yet were restored several times. The fresco of the Judgment together with that of the Madonna and the Saints decorates the walls of the lantern in the oldest part of the Church, that was built from 1176. These frescoes testify to the power and wealth attained in the fourteenth century by the order of the Humiliati. Frescoes were almost hidden by a covering with mortar and not studied for centuries. They represent an important documentation of the guidelines of Lombard painting of the fourteenth century, stimulated by the coming to Milan by Giotto and his aides in 1334 and the presence in the region of other Florentine artists come to the North to escape the plague that struck the city and environs in 1338. Together with these artists, operators were "minor arts and major arts". In the lesser arts were part: blacksmiths, swordsmiths, armorers, cobblers, Leatherworkers, masters of stone and wood. Among the corporations of arts such as the arte di calimala Calimala (Florentine art of international trade in wool and Silk cloths) were: judges, notaries, physicians, Apothecaries, furriers and goldsmiths. ATRA historical reality; in the building that flanks the Church almost twelve pilasters were pilaster strips are represented musical instrument graphics that show that in Milan between the 15th and 16th centuries were used. The history of the Abbey continues with the help of the olivetans § 4 that in 1571 he entered in Viboldo ...
