Chiesa di San Pio, San Giovanni Rotondo
(3.2/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Visit one of the most famous shrines in the world at Chiesa di San Pio, a Catholic shrine for Saint Padre Pio, a friar, priest, and mystic who died in 1968. The old church and the shrine are located in the same place, so you can visit the lower chapel and view the relics of Saint Pio. You can also see his cell, confessional, and many of his personal belongings on display. There are no English tours, so consider hiring a guide or doing research before visiting. Plan your visit to Chiesa di San Pio and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our San Giovanni Rotondo holiday planner.

  • Days ago I visited, in the company of relatives the new Church of Saint Pio and the crypt housing the body of Padre Pio, we were really impressed with the architectural structure of the artwork that is impressive and modern style decorated with wonderful mosaics made of solid gold and precious stones, from the information gathered, the cost of the work comes from the treasure amassed by monks in recent years thanks to donations by the faithful. I cannot deny that I was amazed and perplexed by considering the figure and the thought of Padre Pio and the Franciscan order based on poverty and simplicity. However it remains an extraordinary level artwork and spiritual goal of great importance which make a stop inevitable.
