Steeped in history, Torre Grossa draws visitors with its intricate architecture, important artwork, and impressive views of Tuscany. The 13th-century palace stands on the ruins of an even older building. As the seat of local government for centuries, the building houses civic offices of the town council on the ground floor. Explore the upper levels to find the civic museum and gallery, featuring the former council chamber, and beautiful frescoes painted by the likes of Coppo di Marcovaldo, Lippo Memmi, and Benozzo Gozzoli. Worth climbing the Tower: from there you can enjoy a breathtaking view on the city and its surroundings. The only drawback the price a little high, €9, that includes also the picture gallery and two rooms of the Town Hall.

People's Palace next to the Tower of Grossa is currently used as the Town Hall, Museum of fine arts is a part. 13th-15th-century Sienese and Florentine paintings were on display. Medieval paintings were placed in a large number of collections as the Museum of art is not.

The tower looks fantastic. This we wanted to climb. However you also have to pay for the museum. 13 eu per person.

  • Wonderful views from the top of the tower make this a top attraction in San Gimignano. However beware the only tickets available are combined ones with the archaeological museum and another church in the city which at 9€ is a little steep if you just want to visit the tower. We managed to make it to the museum as well and liked the mediaeval apothecary and herb garden but were let down by the lack of any English language descriptions on any of the collections. Call me a cultural imperialist if you must but considering that 90% of the visitors to this place don't speak Italian it would be nice to have bilingual signs.
  • Getting five stars for the views amazing 360 degree panorama of beauty..be prepped to walk up a few flights of stairs..just gorgeous views
  • Is remarkable, beautiful and medieval. But expensive ticket. I did not pay to climb. There are better views from other parts of the city.
  • Coolest tower in town. There's giant trees growing on top! We didn't want to wait in the hour long line-up to get in though.
  • Magnificent view! No elevator.
