Torre Grossa, San Gimignano

4.6
#4 of 16 in Historic Sites in San Gimignano
Steeped in history, Torre Grossa draws visitors with its intricate architecture, important artwork, and impressive views of Tuscany. The 13th-century palace stands on the ruins of an even older building. As the seat of local government for centuries, the building houses civic offices of the town council on the ground floor. Explore the upper levels to find the civic museum and gallery, featuring the former council chamber, and beautiful frescoes painted by the likes of Coppo di Marcovaldo, Lippo Memmi, and Benozzo Gozzoli. Climb to the top of the palace's tower for one of the best views of Tuscany. To visit Torre Grossa and other attractions in San Gimignano, use our San Gimignano holiday website .

  • In San Gimignano (Siena) interesting visit to the 12th-century Palazzo Comunale which houses the Civic Museum, the Hall of Secret Meetings, the Sala di Dante, the art gallery and the House of the Podestà. Don't miss the climb of the many steps that lead to the top of the Torre Grossa, where the view is truly amazing.

  • The only one of the seven towers in San Gimignano can climb the Tower, stretches around the hills and forests of the neighboring towers and stretches of the beautiful sight of Tuscany. Strongly recommended

  • The scenery from the top is very beauty. You can explore the small towns anytime soon. The tower was once inside the building, right next to the Office of the information is coming out that inside the second floor tickets in the loople ticket office. Climb immediately after buying a ticket. When you purchase tickets to the castle tour being an integrated top tickets are set aside as high as this was difficult to sell without aura, not beautiful and you can enjoy the landscape of Tuscany Jimmy detractors.

  • Museo Civico boasts with stunning frescoes of XIII - XIV centuries. There is also small excellent pinacoteca. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light.
  • Likely the best tower to climb. Be aware of your head when you're at the top! There's a dangerous spot where a couple people hit heir heads while I was there.
  • Wonderful views from the top of the tower make this a top attraction in San Gimignano. However beware the only tickets available are combined ones with the archaeological museum and another church in the city which at 9€ is a little steep if you just want to visit the tower. We managed to make it to the museum as well and liked the mediaeval apothecary and herb garden but were let down by the lack of any English language descriptions on any of the collections. Call me a cultural imperialist if you must but considering that 90% of the visitors to this place don't speak Italian it would be nice to have bilingual signs.
  • Getting five stars for the views amazing 360 degree panorama of beauty..be prepped to walk up a few flights of stairs..just gorgeous views
  • Is remarkable, beautiful and medieval. But expensive ticket. I did not pay to climb. There are better views from other parts of the city.
