Grotte di Stiffe, San Demetrio ne' Vestini

4.5
#2 of 247 in Parks in Abruzzo
Accessible only by guided tour, Grotte di Stiffe is a complex of caves formed by centuries of dripping and flowing water. Listen to the murmur of the streams that pass through the caves, wander past stalactites and stalagmites, and inspect the results of erosion and corrosion over time in the complex rock formations. Be prepared for a long walk with lots of steps. Even if it is warm outside, don’t forget to bring an extra layer, as the caves remain at a constant 10 C (50 F) year-round. Due to unpredictable weather conditions between November and April, it is advisable to call ahead during this period to assure that tours are available. • Diletta's friendliness and professionalism in showing us these beautiful caves to come and visit because they are wonderful in all their beauty and magnificence. Thank you

  • We were accompanied by the very nice Daniela, passionate about things that glitter that in addition to showing us the wonderful caves between waterfalls, stalactites and stalagmites showed us the magic of bacteria capable of creating a kind of glitter above the walls. Caves to visit absolutely. It's worth it.

  • The most striking caves visited so far! To see the waterfall outside in an oase of peace a short walk from the ticket office. To improve shuttle services and waiting times. Create more attractive services for tourists such as souvenirs, bars, toilets and whatnot.

  • Interesting set of caves with two great set-pieces containing waterfalls inside. Set in a mountain in vicinity of Aquila. Obtain tickets at the bottom of the mountain by following the signs (yes it looks dodgy but its the real thing). You'll get a time slot so be prepared to wait or visit the local countryside before going in on busy days. For the visit you park your car on the mountainside just before the caves. At the entrance everyone gets a cool (mandatory) helmet to wear, and a group guide with about 30 people per time slot. For children its quite spectacular and interesting, for adults its OK; I've seen better caves, but still worth it for the price of admission. With children 4/5, adults only 3/5
  • Well maintained and tastefully lit cave system, where you feel like you're exploring it yourself. The guide will answer all of your questions.
  • Definately a must see of the Italian region of Abruzzo. Do you want to be enchanted by something? Well this is the place to visit. The staff is friendly and the cascade at the end of the course is a beauty together with the force of nature that can be felt by listening to the sound of water dropping.
  • I have been there in April 2019. Definitely recommended! If you like nature and especially stone formations, this is a place to go. Adventure lovers also will appreciate. There are guided tours and a ticket cost 10eur. The narrations is in Italian and English. We had a really cool and informed guy, who was also part of the exploration team. The caves are not yet fully explored, even the best teams couldn’t get to the very end so far. There is 10 degrees inside so be sure to wear a warm jacket, warm hat, muffins and long trousers: you will appreciate the warm after 20 Minutes :)))). “Grotte di Stiffe is one of Italy's top Caves to visit. Inside the caves are beautiful caverns with stalactite and stalagmite formations but what makes the tour unique is the stunning waterfall inside the cave emptying into a small lake. A river runs through the cave and creates a waterfall when there's plenty of water. The best time to see the waterfall is in spring since that's when there's the most water.”
  • Nice but quite expensive for what We saw. You can see everywhere human intervention.. i expected something more natural
