  • Romanesque Abbey with a long history. With the kampanily offer excellent views of the surrounding area, including the medieval Soave, partly preserved frescoes by Giotto or his school, as well as the carved marble retabl' behind the altar. The monastery premises occupied by the Museum of the Abbey and the geological Museum (free).

  • The Abbey of Villanova is one of the most important monuments of East of Verona. To those coming from the nearby motorway exit Soave-s. Bonifacio by sr11, sudden, appears immediately after a roundabout with a big plane-tree: the Romanesque façade shines with the warm colors visible at sunset. The church dedicated to Saint Peter was built on an old Roman temple. It suffered serious damage in the earthquake of 1117 and then was probably rebuilt: it contained many works of art. Entering on the wall to the right you see frescoes by the Giotto school depicting moments from the life of Saint Benedict. On the left wall is an interesting statue of piety. The presbytery is raised due to the crypt. Behind the altar you can admire a walnut choir of 1400: over a beautiful carved stone reredos ancona with the figure of St. Peter. Also of interest is the crypt, has 24 pillars supporting arches and small Tuff vaults; from here, through a hallway, the monks went to the adjacent monastery. Always in the crypt there are Roman remains and a marble sarcophagus containing the remains of father Giuseppe Ambrosini, contributor to don Calabria, recently beatified. Also worth seeing are the bell tower-fortress of 1131, recently restored and now open to the public. The adjacent convent was endowed with cloister, the currently visible was completely changed from rear but still retains, incorporated into the masonry, some Gothic arches in bricks. The buildings of the Court, recently ristruttuati, were now used for residential purposes. Pleasant also the walk inside the monastery where the Windows of the corridors you can observe an interesting garden inside the cloister. Also worth visiting the small Museum of paleontology which is overall. To recap briefly: Abbey, crypt, Bell Tower, cloister, monastery, Museum all in one place. The visit is worth a half-day stopover. In the vicinity of the Abbey as well as excellent restaurants are also in the Centre of San Bonifacio a few hundred meters.
