Duomo di Salerno, Salerno

Church Tourist Spot
Duomo di Salerno, the main church of Salerno, contains the crypt that holds the remains of St. Matthew. The church was built over an earlier church, which was in turn built on Roman ruins. Behind the deceptively simple façade of the cathedral lies an ornate crypt, displays of golden altarpieces, tile mosaics, and the tomb of Pope Gregory VII. From the outside, admire the bronze Byzantine-style doors from Constantinople. The 12th-century Arabic-Norman bell tower stands watch at 56 m (184 ft) high. • Salerno Cathedral could be described as atypical. In fact, the first room you come across is the courtyard (generally the churches face onto public squares). This courtyard is perimetrato by columns of spolio crowned with Norman arches. Then you enter the Cathedral. Inside wall light predominates, even fruit for most decorated in white. Behind the altar stands a large mosaic. But the most impressive is the crypt.

  • In the seventeenth century a serious effort has been done to spoil this beauty. In vain. The atrium is incomparable. The tower lovely. Splendid pulpits. Many other fascinating details. Please notice the lions at the entrance of the atrium, the left one a lioness, feeding her pup. The crypt, I'm afraid, is beyond repair.
  • The courtyard prior to entering the actual cathedral held Hippocrates first school of medicine, also the cathedral has 7 steps up to the pulpit, the only other Catholic church outside of Vatican city, to have these 7 steps because this cathedral was once the seat of power for the church after the Pope escaped an attack upon the actual Vatican. This church has a lot of history that's still relevant in our modern lives.
  • Beautiful and unusual Cathedral well worth a visit.
  • Worth visiting while you are in Salerno. I was amazed about how big this church was. There is actually a church inside this church.
  • It was really amazing when u enter the crypt WOW its spectacular.
