Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Campania / Province of Salerno / Amalfi Coast / Salerno / Duomo di Salerno
Duomo di Salerno, the main church of Salerno, contains the crypt that holds the remains of St. Matthew. The church was built over an earlier church, which was in turn built on Roman ruins. Behind the deceptively simple façade of the cathedral lies an ornate crypt, displays of golden altarpieces, tile mosaics, and the tomb of Pope Gregory VII. From the outside, admire the bronze Byzantine-style doors from Constantinople. The 12th-century Arabic-Norman bell tower stands watch at 56 m (184 ft) high. Amazing. You cannot miss it. Medieval church. The cripta downstairs will leave you speechless for its beauty. Also the church is in the old town, which is absolutely great more »
An ancient and stunning structure. There are a lot of sculptures and frescoes. Good place for antiques and museums lovers, to know more about Italy, his history and architecture
Wow, this place is incredible. So many beautiful paintings, sculptures and architecture. The crypt is jaw droppingly beautiful.
A beautiful cathedral. St. Matthews crypt is spectacular!
Cathedral itself is typical Italian, nice to see that in itself however the crypt (downstairs on the right) is quite amazing, the amount of work that went into the frescoes and marble is mind blowing!
I didn't feel safe here, people seems that they don't like foreigners and i left the place asap so i will not put myself in bad situations
