Duomo di Salerno, Salerno

(4.6/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Duomo di Salerno, the main church of Salerno, contains the crypt that holds the remains of St. Matthew. The church was built over an earlier church, which was in turn built on Roman ruins. Behind the deceptively simple façade of the cathedral lies an ornate crypt, displays of golden altarpieces, tile mosaics, and the tomb of Pope Gregory VII. From the outside, admire the bronze Byzantine-style doors from Constantinople. The 12th-century Arabic-Norman bell tower stands watch at 56 m (184 ft) high. • It's definitely the biggest attraction of Salerno. The Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Matteofatto build by Robert Guiscard, is preceded by a portico with arched Romanesque Colonnade raised Arab style, very impressive, that runs an elegant mullioned loggia pentafore. Romanesque and medieval sarcophagi under the porch. The Interior is rich, has a beautiful flooring and is dominated by two magnificent Ambos. There is guarded the tomb of Pope Gregory VII Ildebrando di Soana. The right aisle leads to the crypt where are stored the relics of Saint Matthew, all covered with marble and frescoes.

  • The courtyard prior to entering the actual cathedral held Hippocrates first school of medicine, also the cathedral has 7 steps up to the pulpit, the only other Catholic church outside of Vatican city, to have these 7 steps because this cathedral was once the seat of power for the church after the Pope escaped an attack upon the actual Vatican. This church has a lot of history that's still relevant in our modern lives.
  • Worth visiting while you are in Salerno. I was amazed about how big this church was. There is actually a church inside this church.
  • It was really amazing when u enter the crypt WOW its spectacular.
  • A great church!
  • Nothing special. I don't understand why people give to it 5 stars.
