Duomo di Salerno, Salerno

(4.6/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Duomo di Salerno, the main church of Salerno, contains the crypt that holds the remains of St. Matthew. The church was built over an earlier church, which was in turn built on Roman ruins. Behind the deceptively simple façade of the cathedral lies an ornate crypt, displays of golden altarpieces, tile mosaics, and the tomb of Pope Gregory VII. From the outside, admire the bronze Byzantine-style doors from Constantinople. The 12th-century Arabic-Norman bell tower stands watch at 56 m (184 ft) high. • Founded by order of Robert Guiscard in Norman and consecrated by Pope Gregory VII during his stay in Salerno. There are the relics of the Apostle Matthew.

  • Salerno Cathedral is one of the historical places to visit. The three-nave Cathedral in Romanesque style, it is accessed via the main entrance onto an interior courtyard surrounded by porticos. Architectural element of novelty is the crypt Chamber currently restored in Baroque style, rich in frescoes, which holds the remains of Saint Matthew patron of Salerno.

  • Walking through the historic center of Salerno you come across this place really nice and charming. Interesting historical and architectural point of view. The Cathedral itself is wonderful, preceded by a courtyard that makes it unique. The crypt is gorgeous. Don't pass this one up!
