  • Please note that the Villa is presently France Embassy at the Holy See, the French State property and is not officially open to the public; I was privileged to visit it after a few years my family's thanks to a prelate in relations with this Embassy obtaining an unforgettable memory, as they are very close to the historic sites, unique and often layered in our capital. From the outside the boundary wall reveals only a patch of greenery between the via XX Settembre, via Piave which then well conceals a sixteenth-century origin, modified in the 18th century Casino by cardinal Gonzaga also enriched the exotic garden, creating a rich library of 40,000 volumes in the frescoed rooms. Here are some changes of ownership until 1816 when Paolina Bonaparte Borghese acquired, making reaching the villa the height of its splendour. Much of his work of enrichment in the frescoes, paintings, furniture, is no longer in the villa, dispersed elsewhere; There are still the beautiful décor of the ceiling of the Hall on the ground floor of Atalanta and Hippomenes, the villa is furnished with elegant French Empire furniture. The frescoes in the rooms of the President and the first floor the painted statues of the muses by niches and the fake ceiling chests type Pantheon, the judgement of Paris in Pauline's bedroom. After his death it endured a relentless decline in availability of various descendants of Bonaparte. Suffered severe damage following the capture of Rome. In fact it is inside villa Paolina who found themselves the bersaglieri in 1870, they managed to cross the Aurelian walls with the breach of Porta Pia.
