  • My wife and I took the Touriks Skip the Line tour of the Collosseum and Roman Forum on July 4th, 2019. It got off to a bit of a rough start, when the tour start time was delayed for 90 minutes because of some glitch with the Collosseum. I'm not sure what the glitch was, and all we were told was that Touriks had been informed by the Collosseum staff that our entry was delayed. So much for skip the line, when you end up waiting 90 minutes anyway, after having already shown up a half hour early to the rendezvous point, as instructed. Touriks tried to tell me that they couldn't reach me to inform me ahead of time, but the phone number that they had on file was correct, so I don't know why they couldn't have just called me. Anyway, our tour of the Collosseum was rushed because of the late start time, as we had to meet up with the Forum tour guide (Ian, from NY) at a specific start time. The tour of the Collosseum itself was pretty good, and our tour guide was knowledgeable and fairly engaging. It was when we got to the second half of our tour that things went sour. Ian, our tour guide from New York, (I was hoping for a native Italian, but oh well) was in a bad mood from the start because some folks on the tour were voicing their displeasure to him about the delayed start time for our tour of the Collosseum (apparently I wasn't the only one that Touriks was "unable to contact" in a timely fashion). Anyway, sure, the woman grinding on Ian was a bit harsh and it wasn't his fault or responsibility that the first half of the tour started late, but for the rest of the time on this tour, you could tell he was in a bad mood. He was brusque and chippy with the group, and dropped phrases like "you guys are lucky I'm even doing this tour" and "this is the fifth time I've done this today in this heat; I could be at home", which I thouht was unprofessional and really took away from any enjoyment of the tour. In addition, Ian was pretty aggressively hardcore christian, and made several comments along the lines of "the ancient Romans only became good people with a conscience after they'd converted to Christianity", and that their (the ancient Romans') entire society regretted how they'd been prior to converting to Christianity once they'd "seen the light". As a person with a solid christian upbringing, but also with a degree in History and a minor in Ancient History, I can pretty much roll my eyes at such nonsense. Dude, read your Cicero or Marcus Aurelius. Meanwhile, our tour of the Forum was cut short when we were only about halfway through it, and the Forum security was herding all of the tours out of the area at about 6:30 p.m., so we didin't even get to see everything that we'd paid to see. The tour was supposed to be 2 hours and 45 minutes, and was only about 2 hours total. So all, up, a mediocre tour. Touriks should have reversed the order of the tour, and sent us into the Forum first so that we'd have time to see the whole thing, and then sent us into the Collosseum. They did offer for us to see the Collosseum and then come back for the Forum tour the next day, due to the delay, but like most people, we had a set itinerary and other booked tours, so we couldn't re-arrange at the last minute to take the offer. I wouldn't say to avoid Touriks as a tour group, but be sure to phone ahead to make sure that everything is running smoothly on the day of your tour. This trip cost us over $200 CAD for the two of us, and really wasn't worth it. Response to Tourik's reply: You say that the tour was delayed to avoid the worst heat of the day, but that's absolutely not what we were told on site -- we were told that the delay was out of your control and was because of some issue at the Collosseum management's end. Also, while I did in fact confirm that my email address had changed since I had booked the tour, I also confirmed and insisted at that time that the phone number that you had for me on file was accurate and functional. There is no reason why you shouldn't have been able to reach me by phone.
