  • Very close to the Bocca della Verità, the Tempio di Portunus is an ancient Roman temple of the Republican era, the main dedicated to the god Portunus (god of keys, doors and livestock). The building consists of a portico of four columns on the façade, with columns embedded in walls, this being one of the favorite styles of the ancient Romans. The construction of the building has been dated to around 80 BC, however, there are traces of even more ancient stages, between the end of the 4th century and beginning of the 3rd century BC.

  • It is a temple to Portunus, God of the Roman tiberinus port and the few purely own (not taken from Etruscan or Greek as Zeus/Jupiter), in great condition, allows to know all the parts of a classical temple with elevation and a small scale, and can recognize everything easily. Worse, the reduced opening hours (see it from the outside is more than enough)

  • close to the small round Temple and the mouth of truth, this is unfortunately fenced a busy street. For a few photos it more but not enough.

  • Well preserved "Temple of Manly Virtue" overlooking the old Forum Boarium (cattle market)
  • Any Roman remains are welcome. This little temple is in good conditions. Worth a visit. Also the Temple of Hercules Victor, just a few meters behind.
  • So old tempel. Older than 100 BC.
  • Nice temple. Important in the history of Rome
  • Beautiful and well preserved

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
