Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome

4.3
#16 of 150 in Museums in Rome
Scuderie del Quirinale, originally built to house the papal stables in the mid-1700s, is now an exhibition space that's home to many cultural events and exhibits throughout the year. Check online to see what is showing; past exhibits have highlighted the work of Vermeer, Caravaggio, Tintoretto, and Frida Kahlo, to name a few. The building is located on the highest of Rome’s seven hills, so make time in your visit to head upstairs and enjoy the panoramic views of Rome offered through the great window, which was designed by Gae Aulenti as part of the restoration of the building. • The exhibition of Picasso's paintings executed in a decade between the figurative and the Cubist period spread over two floors of the Museum. The location, overlooking piazza del Quirinale, in front of the Presidency of the Republic and in the shadow of the sculptural group of the Dioscuri, right in the Centre of Rome, is the former papal stables tastefully renovated. Of particular value is the staircase leading to the first floor, with steps very wide, low and sloped, which served to pick up the stairs to the horses, and the ciccioliola leading from the first floor to the upper ones with the center of the nut used to accommodate the elevator. Exceptional views of Rome from the top of the Museum. The exhibition on Picasso was interesting, although I continue to have concerns about an artist in my opinion overrated which, not being objectively an accomplished painter, he slyly turned in on non-figurative styles that did not require skills exceeding those of an amateur painter. But that's my personal opinion, so unconventional as sincere. Though is still interesting to discuss also with works that are far from individual sensitivity.

  • Beyond the exhibition on Picasso, however successful, this building is mirrored between the Quirinal and the Consulta. Is this enough to make it unique. From the top floor you can enjoy a panorama over the city which I think has no equal. From there you realize even more how bella Roma.

  • A time then stall garage now exhibition space. Held exhibitions of great interest, as the current one devoted to Picasso. We'd been there years ago to see the terracotta army of Xi'an.

  • Great exhibition space. Consistently bringing top quality art in well-curated shows. Recently visited on a sweltering day and thoroughly enjoyed the refreshing air conditioning - almost as much as the art itself!
  • Excellent exhibition space. Saw a memorable Picasso exhibit on cubism and classicism on the centenial anniversary of his short but important stay in Italy. Very well currated.
  • Lovely exhibition with Picasso works. Nice rooms.
  • A great art gallery at this location. Views of Rome and close to the Trevi Fountain. A significant monument next to the Presidential Palace.
  • Breathtaking historical building especially by night, due to the chance of admiring Rome's overall beauty.

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
