  • The church is decorated with lots of gold. Furthermore, there are many glass chandeliers, which is good, since there are basically no windows. Over The organ there is a nice stained glass mosaic.

  • I walked in accidentally but was impressed... A small beautiful church with its own history in a small square in Trastevere.... On your walk in the area, spend some time

  • One of the smaller churches that is highly worth visiting is Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala, located just 300 metres from Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. The church is in the Baroque style, listed 1593 – 1610. The exterior runs wide pilasters up the church in two levels, both crowned by Corinthic Capitules. On the inside, the church has just one ship with large chapeller in each side. Marble in brown-orange, blue and golden colors decorate the church, which thus appears as a very colourful and lovely space. In apsis above the main altar, a fresco with Christ on the throne and Mary and Joseph kneeling at his feet is seen. The side chapels have pictures of among others Gerard van Honthorst, Antiveduto Gramatica, Giovanni Ghezzi, Giovanni Odazzi, Francesco Mancini and Carlo Saraceni. Carlo Saracenis's picture depicts Mary's death. Originally, the Church had a painting with the same motif performed by Caravaggio himself. But there were rumours that the model that Caravaggio had used for the picture was a girl who had drowned in the Tiber, and that this poor girl had nourished herself in a profession that the church did not like at all. It was just before that Caravaggio was accused of heresy. In other words, Caravaggio's image came down, for only suspicion of who had been a model was enough for you not to want the picture to be in the church. You can then ask where Caravaggio's work is today, if it still exists? I visited Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala when I walked from Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere and to Villa Farnesina, and when the church was open I spontaneously walked in and saw it.
