  • 1) the church is not mentioned in the quite detailed guide book "Eye Witness Travel Guide." (for the city of Rome). 2) you are really on your way to the churches San. Francesco a Ripa and/or Santa Cecilia. And your time schedule is tight. Should'nt you really skip this church? There are so many churches in Rome. Well I will tell you what I find fascinating about this church. 1) It was almost swamped! 2) to guild was founded in 1492 for craftsmen, tradesmen, pork butchers, and market gardeners etc. The guild owned considerable amount og property. A wise "Madonna of the Garden" was a miracle-working person. It was in her memory in chapel and later a church was built. The guild run a hospital with 50 beds up until the mid 14th cencury. The hospital was for the guild members and male relatives of guild members. (Thus: Women not allowed) 3) The "Madonna of the Garden" probably knew a few things about the property of different plants related to the treatment of deceases. 4) The church thus reminds me of the fact that In large part of the world women are still being treated unjustly.

  • Another beautiful right by the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, delicate interior with well-preserved chapels. Worth a stop if you happen to be on a walking tour of Trastevere.
  • Overwhelmingly beautiful interior, rich with great works of art.
  • This beautiful church is an amazing and prayerful place! It is down the street from San Francesco a Ripa and around the corner from Santa Cecilia. Santa Maria dell'Orto is my favourite church in Rome.
