    1) the church is not mentioned in the quite detailed guide book "Eye Witness Travel Guide." (for the city of Rome). 2) you are really on your way to the churches San. Francesco a Ripa and/or Santa Cecilia. And your time schedule is tight. Should'nt you really skip this church? There are so many churches in Rome. Well I will tell you what I find fascinating about this church. 1) It was almost swamped! 2) to guild was founded in 1492 for craftsmen, tradesmen, pork butchers, and market gardeners etc. The guild owned considerable amount og property. A wise "Madonna of the Garden" was a miracle-working person. It was in her memory in chapel and later a church was built. The guild run a hospital with 50 beds up until the mid 14th cencury. The hospital was for the guild members and male relatives of guild members. (Thus: Women not allowed) 3) The "Madonna of the Garden" probably knew a few things about the property of different plants related to the treatment of deceases. 4) The church thus reminds me of the fact that In large part of the world women are still being treated unjustly.

It owes its name to a popular legend: a farmer seriously ill would get healed after praying an image of the Madonna painted next to the gateway to his vegetable garden. In this place was built a small chapel and then (at the end of ' 400) a true Church. The expenses were incurred from 12 professional associations, known as "University". Park, Fruttaroli, Sadasivan (shoemakers), Molinari, Vintners, Pollaroli and other craft categories. The Church is the Temple of reference for the Japanese Catholic community in Rome. There are many works of art, including paintings by Giaquinto, Baglione and Zuccari. The portal is attributed to Vignola, while the Interior was designed by a student of Michelangelo and the high altar of the door.

Stumbled on this church while looking for Santa Cecilia. The exterior is unimposing, but the door was open and we decided to take a look. WOW!!!! The ornate interior rivals that of many famous churche...  more »

  • Another beautiful right by the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, delicate interior with well-preserved chapels. Worth a stop if you happen to be on a walking tour of Trastevere.
  • Overwhelmingly beautiful interior, rich with great works of art.
  • This beautiful church is an amazing and prayerful place! It is down the street from San Francesco a Ripa and around the corner from Santa Cecilia. Santa Maria dell'Orto is my favourite church in Rome.
  • Beautiful Churchill, nice

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
