La chiesa ebbe origine ,a partire dalla fine del Quattrocento, dopo una presunta guarigione miracolosa attribuita ad una immagine di Madonna con bambino dipinta accanto ad un portale di un orto, trasl... read more »The Church originated in the late 15th century, after an alleged miraculous healing attributed to an image of Madonna and child painted next to a portal of a garden, translated first in a chapel in the church built thanks to the financial help of the corporations of Arts and crafts called "universities". The image of s. Maria Dell'Orto was detached with the entire portion of walls from its original site and positioned on the high altar designed by Giacomo Della Porta. Individual participants at University then joined a fraternity, which also supported the work of Vignola who completed the façade around the end of the 16th century. This is a two-orders and, in the upper is adorned with a row of small obelisks with the cross and an 18th century clock above a window. The Interior of the Church, with three naves divided by pillars, is rich in paintings and marbles, but its peculiar feature is the profusion of white and Golden stucco Pageants in its entirety. The adjoining small chapel of the Church is a true and unknown gem of Baroque. We cannot fail to recall that s. Maria Dell'Orto was used quite often as a film set, such as Rossellini's Rome, open city's masterpiece.show original
This beautiful church is an amazing and prayerful place! It is down the street from San Francesco a Ripa and around the corner from Santa Cecilia. Santa Maria dell'Orto is my favourite church in Rome.
Gianluca PicaA church that, like many in Rome, is a "cause" of a Holy image of the Virgin Mary. By the end of ' 400 has done nothing but beautifying oneself and get rich: artists like the Zuccari brothers have it decorated. Not to mention the splendid manifestation of pure art settencetesca Golden and sumptuous decoration of the vault of the nave, with the frescoes on the vaults of the aisles. Go for it!show original
