Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli is a 16th-century church in Rome. It is devoted to St. Catherine of Siena, and is located on the Quirinal Hill, in piazza Magnanapoli.HistoryThe first church was first built ca. 1575 and originally belonged to an adjacent convent (built ca. 1568 by Pope Pius V) of Dominican tertiary nuns, which today houses the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum of the Dominican Order. Construction of the present church began in 1608, initially at expense of Cardinal Scipione Borghese to a design by Carlo Maderno, and stopped first in 1613. Meanwhile, the monastery acquired the Torre delle Milizie in 1619.When work restarted 1628, it was probably intended to continue according to Maderno's design, but he died the next year, and Giovanni Battista Soria was commissioned to complete the church. He made changes to Maderno's design, how much unknown, since the original plans are not known. Between 1631-1641 the present facade was completed. The Chigi family heraldic symbols of then Pope Alexander VII are featured in the balustrade.

  • The St. Catherine's Church of Magnana Poly is located along via Nazionale, close to Trajan's market. It is a place of worship of the Dominican Monastery of Catholics. At the time of the visit, there was a restriction of admission before any event was held, and it was not possible to enter inside.

  • The church is open: Weekdays 7:30 to 18:00 (Saturdays closed from 12:05 to 14:55); Sundays and Solemnities 9:00 to 12:00, 15:00 to 18:30. The closure times depend on the finishing of liturgical events. Mass is celebrated: Weekdays 8:00, 17:30; Sundays and Solemnities 11:00, 17:30. The Divine Office is celebrated with None at 15:00 and Vespers at 17:00 daily. On weekdays the Chaplet of St Michael is recited at 9:30, the Rosary at 11:00, the Angelus at 12:00 (after Mass in Sundays), the Chaplet of Divine Mercy after None (also in Sundays) and the Way of the Cross at 16:00 on Fridays in Lent. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for veneration on weekdays from after the 8:00 Mass to after Vespers (that is, all day). On Sundays, the Exposition is from 9:00 to 10:30 and from 15:00 to after Vespers. A spectacular interior, well worth seeing. The church is the headquarters of the Military Ordinariate of Italy. The crypt is dedicated to the memory of the Italian soldiers who were killed in both world wars, especially those priests who served as army chaplains and were killed on the Italian Front in the First World War. The total number of Italian casualties on that front was 650,000.
