Presepe dei Netturbini, Rome

4.8
#156 of 249 in Historic Sites in Rome
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Get a new perspective on the creche at Bethlehem at Presepe dei Netturbini, a model village of Jesus' birth created by a waste collector. In close proximity to the Vatican, this spacious recreation of the nativity grotto expresses the devotion of a municipal sanitation employee, including various junk such as fragments from the facade of the Vatican's basilica thrown out after restoration. Tucked away in a former storehouse, the scene has been meticulously built since 1972 and now features more than 100 houses individually lit by bulbs representing hearths. It draws plenty of visitors--including a few popes--and grows from year to year, adding new items from the streets of Vatican. Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.

  • An immense emotion! It's not just about beauty of the Nativity ... is the magic that you create ' entering ' in the crib and its magical atmosphere! All so beautiful, true, authentic and ' hot ' especially thanks to the kindness, passion and warmth that characterises everyone working here and that'll explain, illustrate it all with an open heart! Is an emotion that will remain there for the rest of your life!
