Porta Latina, Rome

3.9
#455 of 526 in Historic Sites in Rome
The Porta Latina is a single-arched gate in the Aurelian Walls of ancient Rome. It marked the Rome end of the Via Latina and gives its name to the church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina. Most of the present structure dates to Honorius, including the arch's voussoirs . The gate retained its name throughout the Middle Ages. Also nearby are the oratory of San Giovanni in Oleo and the pagan Columbarium of Pomponius Hylas.
The gate's single arch is built of irregular blocks of travertine, with a row of five windows above on the outside, and a sixth in brick, at the south end, surmounted by stone battlements. The arch is flanked by two semi-circular towers of brick-faced concrete, which do not rise above the top of the central section. The north tower rests on masonry foundations that may have belonged to a tomb.

  • Is one of the gates of Rome, very special and there are machines that passed under it. Inside I think there is a museum.

  • Crossed by the Via Latina leading to Capua, the ancient Casilinum, stands out as a perfectly preserved Fort along the Aurelian walls, not far from the via Appia antica and POrta Capena. Characteristic is the only FORNIX, which downsized under the Emperor Honorius for defensive needs; It has a façade in travertine original era but, as amended under the Emperor Honorius bordered by towering battlements on top, which stands between the two round towers, no Windows but bearing slits for the archers. Interesting to note the letters listed in the CHI and Rho travertine which Greek key external arch, representing the monogram of the Emperor Constantine, also the alpha and omega and a Greek cross are engraved in the inside.

  • Is one of the most impressive and best preserved among the original doors of the entire circle of the Aurelian walls. It takes its name from that of the street that runs through it. The door, embattled, is flanked by two semi-circular towers with loopholes.

  • We did not have the time to explore the area. In the short time spent here I found out a good playing area for children, a lot of talla trees, no ciment or constructions unnecesary. Interesting is the gate to the park, a short cut for vehiculeals and motorbikes. The.sorroundings are calm and.peacefull.
  • Wonderful place with the surrounding Aurelian Wall. You can make a nice walk with or without a dog along the wall eastward to Porta Metronia and have a drink of water from the aquaeduct...
  • It was in trip to Via Appia with my Tereza in our honeymoon! 9.6.2016

  • One of the many doors opening in the Aurelian walls and allowing access in town. Walking along the walls and under the door you can see all properties which made it possible to block access and defend the entrance to the city. Well preserved structure but it deserves a chance to be visited as the nearby Porta San Sebastiano
