  • From San Pietro via Giulia, to venerate the tomb of blessed Novarese, the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Suffragio, we pass the ponte Vittorio Emanuele, great view over Castel Sant'Angelo. Built immediately downstream of ponte Sant'Angelo, enabling you to connect between the suburbs and the heart of the city through the new Corso Vittorio Emanuele. An interesting story in June 1909 was held a public competition for the sculptural decoration of the piles and of where they were four sculpture groups and four WINS to represent "the virtues of King Vittorio Emanuele II". After many vicissitudes the selection Board took charge of the works the following sculptors: Elmo palaces, Luigi Caps, Amleto Cataldi and Francis Pifferetti for WINS in bronze; Giuseppe Romagnoli for fidelity to Statute (after London, 1849); Italo Griselli for Bravery (the battle of San Martino, 1859); Giovanni Nicolini for political triumph (proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, 1861); Cesare Reduzzi for The father of the country (Vittorio Emanuele in Rome during the flood of 1870). Ettore Ferrari, was President of the jury, to choose the position of individual groups of sculptures that, for delays due to translation in travertine of plaster models were placed on the bridge in early 1912. The work was then inaugurated a first time on May 5, 1911, shortly after the placement of the jubilee celebrations to respect the Victories and a second time after placing groups in travertine, April 28, 1912. We'll walk calmly and between we traffic in via Acciaroli under the monument to Terenzo Mamiami.

  • A wonderful bridge, if I may say so-the architecture, the atmosphere, the Tiber, the Vatican. All very harmoniously, it's nice to stand up and look at the river.

  • The River Tiber is crossed by a lot of bridges in Rome but I think this bridge is a rather different and beautiful bridge. Looking north, there is an inspiring view of Castel Sant'Angelo. One thing I ...  more »
