Ponte Sant'Angelo, Rome

(4.6/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who traversed Ponte Sant'Angelo to reach St. Peter's Basilica, and you'll see the top of the castle where--legend has it--an angel appeared to announce the end of the plague. Roman Emperor Hadrian built the triple-arched, travertine marble-faced bridge crossing the Tiber river in 134 CE. Stately statues of angels watch over the structure, reminding visitors of the miracle. During the jubilee of 1450, so many pilgrims walked over the bridge at once that the balustrades broke, and many drowned in the river. Look for the space at the head of the bridge where houses and a Roman arch were torn down to give them more room. Although the bridge is closed to vehicles, you can walk across and take in the views of the Castel Sant'Angelo. • THE Ponte Sant'Angelo is a real ride on the Tiber. bordered by huge statues Rome with Vatican communicates and offers decent contemplate views

  • Exclusively pedestrian bridge and leads to homonymous Castle. Perhaps for this reason some tourists here to write your comments about Castle, while talking about the bridge (PONTE). On the bridge a bunch of pestering with a desire to sell you a tour of the Vatican, and not less than beggars. Skeptical about what each status column is set to the lamppost attractions, but the bridge on the right carries this title. It isn't great, but deserves a separate inspection.

  • It's quite strange how breathtaking this bridge was to me. ESPECIALLY at night. It offered a beautiful view of the moonlit Vatican, and its right in front of what is, without a doubt, the most beautiful (deceitfully so) castle I have ever seen. Go inside Castle Sant'Angelo. Pay whatever they ask. You seriously won't regret it. And definitely bring your camera.
  • This is such a beautiful bridge both in the day time and night time. The streets are so quiet leading up to the St. Angelo Bridge, which makes for a beautiful experience at night. The history, sculptures, craftsmanship and beauty of the bridge is something worth visiting.
  • Sculptures line both sides of this wherever pedestrian bridge. Art students popular the sides as they practice their drawing skills. The view and sculptures certainly make this worthwhile. Expect religious or mythological motifs for the sculptures. Beautiful, if a bit heavy handed at times.
  • Beautiful bridge just at the bottom of the castle. Its sculptures are worth seeing, i felt like i was protected by angels while I was crossing. Definitely a must see in Rome
  • I love this bridge, its pedestrianised so its great to just relax on and enjoy the view. This bridge is lovely late at night when there aren't many people around and the castle and statues on the bridge are lit up.
