Ponte Sant'Angelo, Rome

4.4
#65 of 2,607 in Things to do in Rome
Follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who traversed Ponte Sant'Angelo to reach St. Peter's Basilica, and you'll see the top of the castle where--legend has it--an angel appeared to announce the end of the plague. Roman Emperor Hadrian built the triple-arched, travertine marble-faced bridge crossing the Tiber river in 134 CE. Stately statues of angels watch over the structure, reminding visitors of the miracle. During the jubilee of 1450, so many pilgrims walked over the bridge at once that the balustrades broke, and many drowned in the river. Look for the space at the head of the bridge where houses and a Roman arch were torn down to give them more room. Although the bridge is closed to vehicles, you can walk across and take in the views of the Castel Sant'Angelo. • If you are going to the castle of Sant'Angelo and the Vatican, I think that it is the best way to get as this bridge is composed of several sculptures of angels holding instruments of the passion. At night, with lights that are around it impresses.

  • I didn't know, before being so wonderfully impressed today, that this kid run to be the most beautiful bridge in the world; I'm not surprised, really could be the winner. And it's true, is impossible to put into words the incredible beauty of this place, not huge, not too monumental, but spintamente fit, absolutely, absolutely, absolutely harmonious, Roman bridge on this beautiful day, when more you notice Black soot on the White statues, and at night, and at dusk, when Trastevere shines brightly coloured on the left bank and the dome of St Peter illuminates more majestic than ever. Will these glimpses make the bridge so unique? Or maybe his sixteenth-century and Baroque sculptures, all unique and different, carry the mark of Bernini? Or maybe the imposing Castle, a small treasure of visible Roman history, whose frescoed balcony overlooks the bridge topped by another beautiful angel? Or maybe-my favorite part-will be the beautiful enclave on a narrow street opposite to the Castle Bridge Ward, curve between a church and the colorful buildings of Papal Rome? And then the blond green Tiber, here even impressive, and its ducks and seagulls and its levees dirty like statues, like the bridge, and perhaps that is even better. Maybe, of course, all of this put together worth not moving for ponte San Angelo, but falling in love with ponte Sant'Angelo.
