Pons cestius (also called pons Aurelius or pons Gratiani or ponte di San Bartolomeo or ponte Ferrato) dates back to 46 or 44 BC. It was rebuilt in 1892 with part of the original stone material.

The bridge dates from 46 b.c., probably by Lucius Cestius, hence its name. It was restored several times and then rebuilt from scratch. It is a three-arched, pontea not particularly interesting, connecting the island with Trastevere.

One of the most beautiful bridges, old and characteristic of Rome because it is pedestrianised. Linking Trastevere with the area of Campo dei Fiori and Via Giulia; great area to go for a walk. Bus ATAC (previously reviewed on Tripadvisor): 116, 23.280.

  • Nice bridge with good views- footpath small and busy at times
  • Like everything else in Rome - a beautiful place, leading to a very cozy neighborhood with small streets and shutters on the windows - typical Italian style.
  • Connects the Isola Tiburina to the Trastevere side of the Tevere River. Be sure to grab Rick Steves' free MP3 audio tour of the Trastevere region. Also, grab a grattachecca, a speciality available in Rome, and made popular by the little green kiosk next to the bridge.
  • Nice bridge!
  • Beautiful and scenic

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
