  • In the heart of the ghetto a little gem: piazza mattei, with its characteristic monumental fountain of the turtles made at the end of ' 500. One of the many beauties of Rome do not miss that, among other things, it was used as the location of some movies, like "the opposite".

  • This square is found in Rome in the rione Sant'Angelo. Here he lived for centuries the Mattei family belonged to the oldest nucleus of the Roman aristocracy, much to boast of in the family of origin as many as eight Cardinals, one of whom became Pope under the name of innocent II. Others, however, would derive the lineage from anagnina family of Gregory IX. Had to Blazon a checkerboard of silver and blue with a gold stripe that runs through it. Note to the violent infighting in the family and always sticking to the Papacy, reached maximum power and wealth in the early 16th century. At the entrance to the Ghetto in Piazza Mattei, there is one of the most beautiful fountains, the fountain of the turtles. It is said that it was built in a short time-according to legend, during one night-based on a design by architect and sculptor Giacomo Della Porta, a pupil of Michelangelo and then by Vignola, in 1581. Taddeo Landini, of Florentine origin, he executed the sculptures of the ephebes soaring by four shells that rests her foot on dolphins and raise your arms to help turtles to enter the upper basin, opera, this design includes fervent Tuscan Renaissance. The turtles, added later in the year 1658, were attributed by tradition to Bernini and are a successful completion of the work carried out during the restoration of the 1658/59, under the pontificate of Alexander VII (1655-67), who is remembered by inscriptions on the four title blocks of marble. During the slow passing of the years, the turtles were repeatedly stolen and then recovered, or delivered by people who accidentally came into possession. Close your eyes now, and try to imagine what was once the unique scenery of the square with the fountain of the turtles in the Center and the five noble palaces around built over 150 years and belonged to the powerful family of Mattei. A jewel of the eternal city that still retains its former glory.
