Piazza della Bocca della Verita, Rome

(3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Piazza della Bocca della Verita houses one of Rome’s most popular curiosities, which rests inside the portico of the beautiful medieval church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The Bocca della Verità is the carved marble image of a man’s face and open mouth, which perhaps dates from the first century. According to legend, those who tell a lie while placing their hands inside the mouth will have them bitten off. Inside the square you'll also spot the Arcus Argentariorum, the Arch of Janus, the Temple of Hercules Victor, and the Temple of Portunus. • The visit lasts 2 minutes, since it consists only in a single sculpture. I don't recommend unless you're passing in front.

  • Agree the whole area is affected by the mouth of truth, but it offers much more. For example the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Arcus argentariorum, the Arch of Janus, the Temple of Hercules (mistakenly identified with the Temple of Vesta to its circular shape) and the Temple of portunus, divinity related to the river port that stood here. And finally the Triton fountain of Bizzaccheri, with two Tritons supporting a shell over the heads from which water flows.

  • There were animal market on the square, formerly known as the Foro Boario. Is the place flourished as a commercial district in the ancient Roman port was used to the water of the River Tiber. Potstunus Temple enshrines the guardian deity of the port of porton around the square and the Temple of Hercules victory God Hercules touring the olive oil business. It was square and even the "mouth of truth" in Cosmedin Church, keeping a nice landscape. Traffic in many street facing the square, was a major road.
