Piazza del Campidoglio, Rome

(4.7/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Piazza del Campidoglio is an example of the grandeur of Italian design--as well as Michelangelo's genius at solving problems with impossible spaces. The piazza's trapezoidal shape prevented the buildings from facing each other squarely. Also, one side of the trapezoid sloped, making the ground uneven. Michelangelo addressed the slope with a ramped staircase and low steps at various intervals that rise and fall according to the incline. The piazza appears to be oval, but it is actually egg-shaped to compensate for the troublesome trapezoid. • Came to consider this place more carefully during the last visit to Rome were here, but due to fatigue impressions a bit blurred. In the great winter, but very warm and sunny day paid tribute to the Capitole square, which had a hand of Michelangelo himself, and then his disciples. Everything here-history, monuments of world importance. Recommend not to miss. Impressions start right with the distinctive stairs, cool going up, decorated with sculptures of Lions. Well, the symbol of Rome-Wolf, here.

  • Square designed by Miguel Angel, where are located the Capitoline museums and the Mayor of Rome. Advancing a little from both sides of the building of the City Hall there are unbeatable views of the Roman Forum. A replica of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius is located in the center of the square. We must also find the small sculpture of the Capitoline she-Wolf.
