Piazza del Campidoglio, Rome

4.7/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web
Piazza del Campidoglio is an example of the grandeur of Italian design--as well as Michelangelo's genius at solving problems with impossible spaces. The piazza's trapezoidal shape prevented the buildings from facing each other squarely. Also, one side of the trapezoid sloped, making the ground uneven. Michelangelo addressed the slope with a ramped staircase and low steps at various intervals that rise and fall according to the incline. The piazza appears to be oval, but it is actually egg-shaped to compensate for the troublesome trapezoid. • Great square, in the heart of Rome, immersed in its ancient and storied history. Arrived for a wedding, we also had time for a quick visit. But certainly we will have to go back to explore all its wonders

  • The best of this square is the view that has to the city, especially at sunset. The building of the Government that is there also is cute, but not to go to this place to see it. The scale that precedes it is beautiful!
