Piazza del Campidoglio, Rome

4.7
#25 of 252 in Historic Sites in Rome
Piazza del Campidoglio is an example of the grandeur of Italian design--as well as Michelangelo's genius at solving problems with impossible spaces. The piazza's trapezoidal shape prevented the buildings from facing each other squarely. Also, one side of the trapezoid sloped, making the ground uneven. Michelangelo addressed the slope with a ramped staircase and low steps at various intervals that rise and fall according to the incline. The piazza appears to be oval, but it is actually egg-shaped to compensate for the troublesome trapezoid. • Designed by Michelangelo, the Capitol Square is pretty get there by the stairs Cordonata also thought by Michelangelo to discover with Castor and Pollux statues guarding the entrance, unfortunately, we can not admire the drawing of the soil of the place, maybe by visiting the Museum of the Capitol? Down the other side to admire a splendid view over the Roman forum with the Colosseum in the background: also at night, the lights feature a totally different impression of the day

  • It's a wonderful square, among the most beautiful in Rome, designed by Michelangelo and built between 1534 and 1538. It is bounded by the new Palace, the Palazzo dei Conservatori (both House the Capitoline museums) and the Senatorial Palace which is the seat of the municipality of Rome. At the Center is a copy of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the original you see inside the Capitoline museums. The ascent is strictly required by the elegant Cordonata. For those who were already find the forum you can also reach it from there but it's not the same because the glance is very different. Start here your visit to Rome would not be a bad idea, especially if one is very early. Spectacular sight even at night, it is not uncommon that I may bring here in the middle of the night someone coming to Rome for the first time.

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
