  • While I was in Rome I received a notification in my inbox from that Palazzo della Sapienza would be open. It's not normally open to the public as it forms part of the Italian state archives. Having an...  more »
  • It encloses the often closed church of St. Ivo and the State Archives. The courtyard is of extraordinary beauty and elegance and I recommend going upstairs to admire the details (eg, carved bees) of the property.

  • A yard long two centuries in which Popes and architects superimposed many environments, including the famous library created by Pope Alexander VII, to complete what was once the home of the University of Rome (the first faculty however arose much earlier in 1244) the creation of modern campus in the twentieth century that led him to migrate to the faculties, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, leaving only the representative office at the Church of St Eustace. The Palace is next to palazzo Madama currently the Senate but develops from piazza s. Eustachio. The motto can be seen on the front door of the old façade "Initium sapientiae timor Domini" originated the name with which the University of Rome La Sapienza is universally known; inspired by the designs of Giacomo della Porta were defined in the current arrangement the façade and the wonderful backyard porch (portico on the ground floor and upstairs) so that one can attribute surely the work in its most significant to this artist. The stern façade on corso Rinascimento was completed in 1586, punctuated by two corner ashlars, with vertical bands on the right the Bell Tower and on the same corner on the second floor the clock face. Very huge brick courtyard flooring classic herringbone and large geometric bands placed in travertine stone to mark the lines of slope. Of course open to the central State, which houses the Archives holds documents, Vatican City State, the representative office of the University.

  • As a Dane you should look here. Here in the courtyard you can look up to the tower that inspired the architect to create the Frelsers Church's winding tower at Christianshavn.
  • Wonderful courtyard built piecemeal between 1562-1667.
  • roma university was born at here.
  • Francesco Borromini's architecture is a precious gift and the building and the church are proof of this. The State Archives section could have smarter management perhaps allowing a close-up view of the wonderful Borrominian dome

  • In the walls of the palace was the Roman University (Studium Urbis) founded by Pope Boniface eighth. The state Archives of Rome are now located here. Here you can see the library of the Great Barromini Project and the dome with a concave façade. The dome has a spiral crown. It's a quiet place and a little crowded. Nearby are Piazza Navona.
