  • On the way to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, I got to see this great, tall and great obelisk in red granite which was placed here in 1588. It is the oldest and largest standing obelisk in the world of Egyptian, as well as, it is also the highest obelisk in Italy. It was located on this place in 1588 and in fact it has an exciting story that began long before this. It was taken to the Alexandria of the Nile at the beginning of the fourth century with the Obelisk of Theodosius of Constantine II. After some ten years in Alexandria, sent Constantine II Lateran Obelisk to Rome his visits in which the ifm only in 357. Where was it located at/in the Circus Maximus where it stood until the Western Roman Empire (in the fifth century). When the Circus Maximus was abandoned was the Obelisk liggene under mud and Earth. Parts of the Obelisk was found in the 14. and 15. century, and three parts of it was dug up in 1587. After a restoration (was it about 4 metres shorter) and it was erected at the current place in 1588. It is topped with a cross and decorated with inscriptions that tell of its Egyptian history and his journey to Alexandria and Rome.

  • The Lateran Obelisk is not only the oldest and highest obelisk in Rome, but (in my opinion) is also the most beautiful. Rises majestically in piazza San Giovanni in Laterano (basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is 2 minutes) and of the grandiose Egyptian hieroglyphs plainly visible to the naked eye.
