  • A very strange and different obelisk but also one that is very beautiful with its elephant.
  • My favourite sculpture in Rome. Worth a close view!
  • Definitely worth a look. Odd bit of history behind this fascinating sculpture, which decorates a small and plain piazza in front of Basilica S. Maria sopra Minerva. Story says the artist Bernini wanted for decades to use this theme (elephant with small Egyptian obelisk, found on the site, riding on its back) and finally got his chance. Another story says Bernini wanted the rear end of the elephant mooning the building behind, where Gallileo was made to recant.
  • The obelisk is one of the 13 obelisks in Rome. It was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and it was unveiled in February 1667 in the Piazza della Minerva in Rome where it stands today.
  • This is the second place where I was seeing elephant in one of there art work after a an art from museum of rome.
