Along with the dome of the Vatican, the castle of Sant'Angelo has the best views of Rome from the Colosseum to the Vatican and the bridge of Sant'Angelo looks great from above. Only by this visit is essential. Us over were lucky to go on first Sunday of the month which is free and despite this we were not more than half an hour waiting in line. The entry I think that you cost 14 euros but it is included in the Roma Pass. We already had used it in the Coliseum and Capitoline museums so we had the idea of using the reduced entrance to the Rome Pass. And not only for the views is essential but that the Museum which houses already by itself is worth. An authentic Treaty of history and imagination in this place, which was built nearly 200 years ago as the tomb of Hadrian and that has subsequently served as a fortress, prison and Palace or refuge for popes, since the castle was connected by passages with the Vatican. You can see a number of Renaissance frescoes, sculptures, gunsmiths, uniforms... And also as climax has some extraordinary view terraces where you can take something and even dinner. Also is recommended see its web page to learn about your history and where you can even download documents that help in the visit.

Our visit lasted two hours and we quite liked. Although the wifi that we had used for the audio guide, that we had in our mobile, download did not work well. So we had to use our data and cost us a little, some parts could not be heard well. But the castle itself hides many history and is larger than it looks on the outside. He has much to show and is spectacular.

  • Stunning rooms, stunning view and museum. A bit pricy, but well worth the money.
  • Beautiful in night time.
  • Ok museum, small and crowded, nice views from the top.
  • "The pinwheel of 30 June" (2015) a fantastic event that was held on the day of St Peter and St Paul, patrons of Rome, with fireworks of immeasurable beauty with a backdrop of Castel Sant'Angelo and the first floor of the Tiber River lit by the glare of the lights. A must for a unique experience!

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
