Mario Praz Museum contains over a thousand and two hundred works, including furniture, paintings, drawings, works of art and by collecting a wide range. It was kept the furniture as well as had placed him and visiting the various rooms exude a bit of his presence, you can appreciate its refined taste and love for the Empire style and beauty in General. You can visit for free but only on reservation and in groups of no more than ten people. It is accompanied by a chaperone very prepared that explains everything about objects, paintings, furniture etc. exposed. I went there with my husband and a couple of friends and it was just us 4 to visit it because few know it. In Italy there are several historic house museums and interest in Rome and Milan, but they are not particularly promoted, perhaps because it usually belong to foundations and shows for free. A shame as I personally, although traditional Museum lover, here I really felt the passion and finding a man extraordinarily well-read and art lover, very charming!

Mario Praz was born and died in Rome, was of Swiss origin and much of your life lived in England where he was a professor of prestigious universities. Art collector and critic, translator, journalist and writer. This museum was opened to the public in 1995. Situated on the third floor of the building, where Mario Praz Primoli lived his last years and where he died. Is a House Museum, com10 rooms and almost 1500 pieces. There are paintings, sculptures, furniture, Crystal, designs. All the pieces were personally selected and bought by Mario Praz in antique shops of Europe. Beautiful Museum, outside the tourist circuit, for those who love art and culture.

The Mario Praz is a private museum. It does not receive all the hours than 10 visitors at a time. We walk in the apartment of this collector admiring of great portraits, paintings and beautiful objects mainly from the 19th century. Everything is prepared as if he were still alive. The Museum is free. A tip: check the opening days and visiting hours.

  • A small museum in the apartment where he lived and died by Mario Prats-writer, historian, translator, and art collector. In this small museum you can see many interesting things. Admission is free, but on a schedule. Very interesting guide will tell about the life and the collection owner (in Italian or English)

  • Very interesting neoclassical furnishings and Empire, but especially for collections of waxes and fans.

  • The visit was accompanied by a guide, but didn't give us much information about the life of Praz. The Museum would be more interesting for those who already know a little about his life or his work.

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
