  • This free museum, part of La Sapienza, showcases copies of (mostly) ancient Greek and Roman statues and reliefs (from the world's great museums in Paris, London, Berlin, Athens, Rome, the Vatican, etc...  more »
  • The Museum contains Roman copies and not, all works fundamental to know enough classical art: you can stop at the tables and study, is a place full of peace, although sometimes a bit too crowded

  • One of the museums with the highest number of chalk statues you may find in Italy. Actually, it is a so called "gipsoteca" (chalk statues museum). Placed within the campus of the University Sapienza of Rome, the entrance is free and from the main door of the department. However, if you come here too late you will need to enter from another door, that is still within the department. In the hallways you will find tables for students. Indeed, this museum was originally thought for fine arts students: it represents a former 3D catalogue of important statues from all over the world, and it was born when 3D digitized copies of cultural heritage artifacts were not possible. In the middle of the museum, there is a circular lecture room with a piano: if you are lucky enough you may find someone playing the piano introducing the perfect music for this place. There are hundreds of statues inside, it took me 1 hour and half to be fully visited (I had a slow pace). You will also find some more recent inventions prototypes, like the Edison's Phonograph. A not well-known museum, which totally deserves a visit. Be sure to do not miss it!
  • Best museum in Rome. It takes gypsum to a whole new level. Larger and more spectacular collection than the Gipsformerei in Charlottenburg.
  • In this museum are preserved many replicas made in plaster of important statues. In fact, in the years past when there were still no Internet connections students of ancient letters and archaeology as well as art in order to see the pieces they studied had at their disposal this gipsoteca. And here appears the door of the lions, the Hercules Farnese, the Nike of Samothgcia, the Venus of Milo, the tyrannicals; all together as if the various museums of the world, where they are jealously guarded, had decided to supersede their property only to form them to give back to the world these accessible beauties in a single visit.

  • In addition to being an interesting gipsoteca to visit is also a wonderful place to study and focus.
