  • We were walking by (on our way to nowhere in particular) and saw the door open, so we followed a few others in just for a peek. This place is small and easily seen. It should not be missed for the ori...  more »
  • In brick on via della Teatro Marcello at Civic 40 a door with an arch topped by a fresco, continuing at civic 32 another door topped by a marble relief enclosed in an oval frame. Turning around this wall I caught a glimpse of the beautiful frescoes from a window; the monastery founded in the fifteenth century by St. Francis Romana, incorporating the Tower of Mirrors inside, " hides " a church and a chapel of the fifteenth century. Now I have to figure out how you can visit.

  • I knew of fame this Monastery of the Oblates of Santa Francesca Romana of Tower of Mirrors a short walk from the Marcello Theatre and the Capitol! The peculiarity of this site is that it is only opened to the public once a year, that is, on March 9th the day the Saint was canonized. But today... Fluke... the Monastery was opened exceptionally because on 9 March it had had a disproportionate number of visitors and many had not been able to enter! So here I enter and I am dazzled especially by the Fifteenth century Oratory with beautiful and colorful frescoes preserved very well that fill the 4 walls! frescoes attributed to Antoniazzo Romano, Benozzo Gozzoli, as well as a follower of Piero della Francesca!!!! The scenes narrate the life and works of Saint Francis, described by descriptive texts in the 14th-century Roman vernacular. Beautiful representation of hell! Particular is the room of the Refectory that contains 10 tiles made with the cool technique with monochrome turrets where the green color dominates. The tiles tell the story of the Saint who escapes the temptations that present itself in the form of terrible and multifaceted demons and the angel that helps her to defeat and drive them away. The chapels, the Baroque refectory, the cloister and the garden are still not possible to visit them. Too bad!
