  • It is the sacred newsagents, almost always of Marian subject, that are located at the corners of the old palaces, intersections, and towers: all places that need protection. They are the testimony of a popular religiosity and more generally of a way of life in Rome. Finally, the sacred newsagents lit up the street of the travellers at night.

  • Apart from religious devotion, Rome is populated by small images of the Virgin or Saints because there is an urban myth that thieves (thieves) do not usually commit robberies in the presence of them out of fear. So they function as some kind of "theft insurance." Believe or Burst

  • These are one of my favorite things about Rome. Today I found several more that I had never seen before ... and they are all unique, and lovely. Keep yours eyes open for them as you explore the Eterna...  more »

  • This sacred shrine, depicting "the Madonna and Child" (XVIII-XIX century), is located in Rione 13 (Trastevere), at the corner of Via dei Genovesi, with a street of light at a height of about 4-5 meters (between the first and the second floor). It is a terracotta bas-relief depicting the Madonna who, with a loving gaze, holds in her arms a smiling baby Jesus chubby and partially nude (because she rises with her hands her clothes). Both have Hales, where there are some traces of color, suggesting that probably the composition was once polychrome. At the bottom left is a scroll rolled with a bow, while in the upper right and left there are two smiling and blessed Putti. To protect the newsstand is a full-bodied roof with two-sloping (hut-shaped) tiles held by a wooden structure. Completes the newsstand the inevitable lamppost in wrought iron of excellent workmanship (not working). Note: In Rome, the sacred newsstands, which depict "La Madonna", are called "Le Madonnelle", and are generally placed at the corners or facades of the palaces, then outside the places of worship and are symbols and testimonies that for their position share with The population the daily living, and are in several cases of real works of art, in fact some over the centuries, were then placed inside the churches. In ancient times, when there was no public lighting, thanks to the always lit lights also served as a guideline for the hiker. Many times they were inserted in the place where a particular fact occurred, then declared as a miraculous event, and then for each there would be a long story to tell full of prodigious facts and legends. They are therefore from many centuries traditional places of devotion in fact are cured and often are placed flowers and ex-vow.

  • There are many "madonnelle", on the walls of Rome, apart from the artistic aspect/religious, initially their presence had an important social aspect. The Roman roads were unlit and lit votive lights under the icons made safer passage of travelers. Are placed at the top, often next to pubs and inns. The beautiful, in a sonnet dedicated to good manners, is about a father who advises his son to carry in your Pocket knife and Crown to the Rosary!
