  • A small jewel in the heart of Rome, a monumental fountain dating back to the time of Augustus discovered by chance during the works in Via Hannibal. Coming from Via Cavour you arrive in Via Hannibal and just before the end of the road you can see a metal door. By crossing this door and descending through a steep spiral staircase you enter the world of old Rome, mysterious and fascinating, in front of the Hannibal Nympheum. Immersed in this magical world, you can admire this building that is nestled in the basement in a circular apse, with niches at the bottom and with a deep tub. The entire facade of the apse is decorated with white, red and yellow plaster and is covered with mosaic obtained with sea shells, with small marble scales, with pumice stone and with glass of various colors that threw reflections to pleasantly illuminate the Local. The whole environment is characterized by the rich decoration and is so impressive that it almost recreates an interior corresponding to a sea cave. The was part of a large structure of an aristocratic dwelling of the Roman baronial family of the Hannibals located on the Opium Hill and which was destroyed to make way for Nero's Domus Aurea. It should be considered that in ancient times the nymphs included structures equipped with tubs and aquatic plants where the nobles spent moments of leisure and where they feasted in these magical and hidden places.

  • Monumental fountain discovered by chance in the late 18th century, at the corner of via Annibaldi and away safely. The building is very old, dating back to Roman times.

  • Very interesting site to see and admire for its uniqueness. It came to light during the construction of Hannibal Street (formerly the Snake Street), and partially destroyed. It descends about 8 meters through a very narrow and steep spiral staircase (not suitable for people with disabilities) and you find yourself in the tub of the nymph. The uniqueness of the nymph that is made with telline shells and other valves.visit very interesting made with the overconsposition of the municipality of Rome. Free with Mic

  • Interesting visit organized by Anita and Valentina to this small portion of the beautiful nymphaeum of the Augustan period, certainly annexed to a neighboring Villa now destroyed The nymphaeum must then have been partially demolished by Nero to make room for the construction Domus aurea It remains about half of a hemicycle whose wall in Malta, with crustations of pumices and shells, still visible, reproduced a marine cave In the wall there were also inclusions of elements in vitreous paste and perhaps even glass mosaic Perhaps it was also used as a summer cenatio of the villa Demonstrates the very high Roman construction technique and the great capacity of reproduction of natural elements, which show the highest level of luxury and refinement of the Domus of the Augustan period Unfortunately, the remaining portion of the Nymphaeum was demolished at the end of the 19th century for the opening of Via degli Annibaldi, one of the many unworthy destructive disemburments with which Rome pays the price of having become the capital of the papate before and then D Italia. In addition this disembowelment had no scenographic or archaeological results. Except for this finding, which risked total destruction Visit to be made, if interested in a considerable deepening, but you need to book and have the guide

  • I discovered this site through the television services of Alberto Angela Prima and Roberto Giacobbo after. If you are part of a cultural association it is more simply to reach the minimum number of people so that it can be visited. You access the site by going down a spiral staircase that leads us to 5/6 meters below the road level. There is a lot of humidity but as soon as the metal door is closed you will appreciate the light games that are reflected on the shells that cover the walls of the nymphaeum and the noises of the cars do not disappear but are considerably attenuating. Too bad that we were two groups and the 15 minutes granted to mine have flown, I would have stayed much more especially for the story of the guide that for that quarter of an hour took us back 2000 years.
