  • Created by Giacomo della Porta in 1589 is a 3 basin fountain atop which it the heraldic symbol of the papal family Pope Sixtus V. It is located on an asphalt island in the center of Piazza d’Aracoeli ...  more »
  • The fountain is one of many that go unnoticed, unfortunately ended up on the margins of everyday life. This, then, despite being at the foot of the Capitol, is in a sacrificed position, in the confluence of two busy streets, in Piazza d'Ara Coeli, behind a building and to bring it back to the headlines I dedicated some of my time. I look closely at it because the water's zampillar instills a hypnotic sense of pleasant calm. The usual roadway has not yet resumed, but the havoc that relegates it to the partition of chaos remains. Commissioned by Sisto V to James of the Gate, the fountain has a circular basin perimerate with columns joined by an iron railing. In the center, two small, larger, oval shapes, reminiscent of the contour of a boat, while the upper one is topped by four cherubs that have small otri from which they pour water into the circular vessel. The water then passes from tub to tub and falls into the lower basin. I really like it.

  • This fountain was not on our itinerary, but we walked right past it. With fountains around every corner in Rome, not all of them can be spectacular.  more »

  • Fountain at foothills of Capitoline Hill where the Basilica d'Ara Coeli is located. Pope Sixtus V instructed Giacomo della Porta for project by 1589. First and simplest of Renaissance fountains. It holds many bus stops and gives a nice view of several landmark buildings ( Altare della Patria, Palazzo Venezia, Museum Capitoline, Basilica .....)
  • A small fountain that has as its background the Altar of the Fatherland. Every fountain, from the smallest to the largest, has its history always very interesting as all the stories of ancient Rome and even this fountain is no less. If you take a walk there, stop and look at this small fountain, which is often ignored.

  • Almost suffocated by the chaotic traffic of Piazza Venezia and the Campidoglio, this fountain passes almost unnoticed to the tourist who walks here. Not particularly valuable or architectural structure is still very pleasant. It should, however, be cured better because today it seems really almost abandoned to itself and the neglect of the general Inciviltà! @gargio76

  • It is located in the square from which it takes its name, at the foot of the hill of Campidoglio, where there is the church with the same name. It was commissioned by Pope Sixtus V in 1589, to James of the door who designed the drawing. The road-level fountain has a large tub, which along the perimeter has several balusters, linked together by iron rods. Above another roundish tub, adorned in the lower part by masks, finally a balustrade supports a small circular tub, topped with putti that support the symbol of the Chigi family. All with various coats of arms identifying the papate and the commune of Rome. The pretty fountain in its conception and aesthetics, would need a significant restoration.
