Fontana dei Quattro fiumi, Rome
Categories: Fountains, Tourist Spots
Centered in the Rome's Piazza Navona, Fontana dei Quattro fiumi is one of Italy's most ornate fountains. Admire the detailed sculptures depicting the four rivers known in the world at the time: Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Rio de la Plata. Bernini designed the Egyptian obelisk crowning the 35 m (115-ft) tall structure in 1651. The fountain was intended to be the centerpiece of Pope Innocent X's nearby family palace. Fontana dei Quattro fiumi is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Rome Edition.

Went here on our last night in Rome. There are very lovely fountains and quite large plaza square with shopping and restaurants galore!
Very impressive fountain set in a very large Piazza. Lots of stone benches to sit on and several shops selling great gelato.
What more can be said? I love this piazza, love this fountain, and love and appreciate this eternal city...
Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) is a fountain in the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Berninifor Pope Innocent X whose family palace, the Palazzo Pamphili, faced onto the piazza as did the church ofSant'Agnese in Agone of which Innocent was the sponsor. The base of the fountain is a basin from the centre of which travertine rocks rise to support four river gods and above them, an ancient Egyptian obelisksurmounted with the Pamphili family emblem of a dove with an olive twig. Collectively, they representfour major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile representing Africa, the Danube representing Europe, the Gangesrepresenting Asia, and the Río de la Platarepresenting the Americas.

The Fontana dei Quatro Fiumi (Fountain of Four Rivers) is one of the top attractions of Rome. Located in the center of Piazza Navona attracts thousand of visitors day and night. It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The rivers are (each one for a different continent) the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges, and the Río de la Plata. A visit is highly recommended.
The Fountain of the Four Rivers is just as breathtaking as the Trevi fountain, with the added bonus that it's located in one of the best piazzas in Rome.
Situated in easily one of the best piazzas in Roma, the fountain is adorned with beautiful sculptures. Definitely as good as the Trevi. Wonderful at night.
Dare I say, this is certainly the most meaningful architecture commissioned in Rome. And I say this after having been on the tourist trail of the usual suspects !!!!!
