Fontana dei Quattro fiumi, Rome

4.7
#16 of 482 in Sightseeing in Rome
Fountain Tourist Spot
Centered in the Rome's Piazza Navona, Fontana dei Quattro fiumi is one of Italy's most ornate fountains. Admire the detailed sculptures depicting the four rivers known in the world at the time: Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Rio de la Plata. Bernini designed the Egyptian obelisk crowning the 35 m (115-ft) tall structure in 1651. The fountain was intended to be the centerpiece of Pope Innocent X's nearby family palace. Fontana dei Quattro fiumi is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Rome Edition.

  • Interesting and detailed fountain and worth a look. Illuminated at night so really pretty. Quite historic also vis-à-vis the supply of water to Rome.  more »

  • Another gorgeous fountain in a ancient plaza. The spacious area allows you to walk around a little more than the narrow streets, though it is usually very crowded here. The surrounding buildings are very beautiful and add even more history to the scene that you observe here.
  • A must see fountain in Rome. Not as popular as Trevi, but arguably more interesting.
  • Lovely place. A lot of restaurant to enjoy a glass of wine and the view.
  • Very special and spectacular fountain. The plaza is very beautiful.
  • You should come by here to see a pretty plaza. The fountain is nice. Don't miss it.

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
