The Catacombe's were used by the Christians to bury their dead. This is definately something that you should see while you are in Rome, it is very interesting indeed.  more »

There are many opportunities to visit one of the many catacombs outside Rome. We bought a combined ticket for a trip by bus from central Rome Termini, in addition to one of the closest to Santa Domitilla catacomb of balbina, where located the entrance to of balbina with guide also was included. Under the Earth here are approx. 18 km times where there have been 150,000 burials. The catacombs were not only burial places, but also freedom of assembly sites for the Christians in the first centuries of persecution. When you come from the strong heat outside, it's nice to come down under the ground to dip around 7 degrees. You go in a group, along with the wizard in the long times, where tombs have been inside the wall along the sides. The tombs are of course empty now, but you get an excellent impression of the funeral culture. In some places there are painted early frescoes on the walls. We see also in several places the first simple Christian symbols.

We visited at the end of a long day so my opinion may be jaded. Not what I expected. The highlight was some frescos from the second century.  more »

  • I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the catacombs. First time I had been to any place like it. Learned a lot about the trees above ground and their significance as well as visiting the church that is the entrance to the catacombs. The catacombs are expansive, although you will only visit a small part of it. These are well preserved and relatively easy to traverse which is not true (I'm told) of most catacombs as they require a lot of steep walking through narrow passages.
  • I went with a group and really enjoyed it. I wish there was more time to look around underground, but I understand there's a safety factor.
  • Best advice I can give is to go to this place yourself instead of on a tour. I loved it but I did not get anywhere near enough time to explore due to it being only one part of my half day tour of underground Rome.
  • Short guide tour for the 8 euro charge. Gave a informative and entertaining tour in the catacombes. Realy worth the buss trip out of the city center.
  • City Tours guided us here. Very interesting with a labyrinth of catacombs. Cave like niches where bones were buried. You only see a tiny part of the complex. Pretty garden too.

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
