Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.

  • I wish I had had more time to explore this place I would have had more time if I hadn't used a tour company! My advise go do it without those tour companies as you don't get enough time using them ver...  more »
  • My wife and I visited in early June. On the day we were there, we waited only 5 minutes for the English tour to begin (you cannot do it on your own). The group was quite large and we were at back so w...  more »
  • Did a tour with city sight seeing Roma. The shuttle bus picked us up near the main bus terminal. The sight is amazing. It's obviously underground and the tour guide was very informed. The story of the...  more »

  • I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the catacombs. First time I had been to any place like it. Learned a lot about the trees above ground and their significance as well as visiting the church that is the entrance to the catacombs. The catacombs are expansive, although you will only visit a small part of it. These are well preserved and relatively easy to traverse which is not true (I'm told) of most catacombs as they require a lot of steep walking through narrow passages.
  • I went with a group and really enjoyed it. I wish there was more time to look around underground, but I understand there's a safety factor.
  • Best advice I can give is to go to this place yourself instead of on a tour. I loved it but I did not get anywhere near enough time to explore due to it being only one part of my half day tour of underground Rome.
  • Short guide tour for the 8 euro charge. Gave a informative and entertaining tour in the catacombes. Realy worth the buss trip out of the city center.
  • City Tours guided us here. Very interesting with a labyrinth of catacombs. Cave like niches where bones were buried. You only see a tiny part of the complex. Pretty garden too.
