Column of Marcus Aurelius, Rome

The Column of Marcus Aurelius is a Roman victory column in Piazza Colonna, Rome, Italy. It is a Doric column featuring a spiral relief: it was built in honour of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and modeled on Trajan's Column.
Because the original dedicatory inscription has been destroyed, it is not known whether it was built during the emperor’s reign or after his death in 180; however, an inscription found in the vicinity attests that the column was completed by 193.
In terms of the topography of ancient Rome, the column stood on the north part of the Campus Martius, in the centre of a square. This square was either between the temple of Hadrian and the temple of Marcus Aurelius, or within the latter’s sacred precinct, of which nothing remains. Nearby is the site where the emperor’s cremation occurred.

  • This 30 metre high pictorial history of the triumphs of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius is in magnificent condition. Sadly the man himself was dead before it was completed in 193 and even more sadly his s...  more »
  • It does not have the beauty of the Column of Trajan, but it is worth visiting it when it is strolled through Rome.It was sent to build by emperor Commodus in the late 2nd century AD. It was erected to celebrate The Victorious Campaigns of Marcus Aurelius on the Germanic peoples. The column is almost 30 meters high and today gives its name to the square that houses it, Piazza Colonna, in front of Palazzo Chigi, seat of the Presidency of the Council. The column is fully covered by bas-reliefs that together measure 110 meters. At the top of the column was originally a statue of Marcus Aurelius, lost during the Middle Ages. In its place is a bronze statue representing St Paul sent put by Pope Sisto V in 1589.

  • This place is one of the less visited in Roma but I adore it.... the column is simple magnificent. I wish I’m available to describe all the prints in the column. This is a perfect square to seat and relax Entrance free
  • Thinking about the history of millennia that exudes from this marble makes small all the characters who alternate in the building opposite. It is a pleasure to pause and look at the details of the column that celebrate the deeds of war. Beautiful and underestimated.
  • The best way to see this is on of the free city tours. They'll take you right through it and tell you all the history, or you can just plan to walk through it..
  • Nice public square in the heart of Rome with a fascinating column right in the middle. If you aren't looking for it this place can come out of no where as you are walking the streets. Another example of what makes Rome such an incredible place to visit.
  • Much better than those two thousand year-old 3-star columns!
