  • The Column of the Immaculate is located in Piazza Mignanelli, in front of the Spanish Embassy at the Holy See and looks towards Piazza di Spagna. This column was erected almost two centuries ago, thanks to the work of the Fire Brigade. They wear a wreath every year for the feast of the Immaculate on 8 December. The ceremony is very impressive and I was lucky enough to be present several years ago.

  • It is dedicated to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception and composed of a Roman column of marble, almost 12 meters high. It was erected to commemorate dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. It is on a pedestal with the statues of the four prophets who spoke of the Virgin: Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and David. At the bottom of the pedestal are four bas-reliefs representing Annunciation, the Dream of Joseph, the Coronation and the Proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate. Above the Corinthian column capitel you see a set with the symbols of the four evangelists that sustain the world and the moon, and on earthglobe is the statue of the four-meter-tall Statue of Mary. The column is wrapped in a brass grille that beautifies and reinforces its structure.

  • Colonna Dell' Immacolata is a nicely-built monument on Mignaneli Piazza in the 19th century depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary. Don't miss this spot when travel to the nearby Spanish Steps.  more »

  • Nice column near to the Spanish steps - very tall and is a landmark in the square, it dominates the space! Very well preserved
  • Worth stopping for a quick look if your in the area!
  • Near Spanish steps, why no go up to the column and take a good look. You will be in the area for sure!
  • Crowded area of Rome, but worth a nice evening stroll to get gelato and eat on the Spanish Steps and just people watch.
  • Our tour from the Spanish Steps made a stop at this location. We were told of a nice tradition that the fire department performs. Every December 8, the day of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a ceremony is held here, often with the Pope in attendance, where the head of the Italian fire department presents a bouquet with the help of a fire truck to place it around the right arm of the Virgin Mary statue and another bouquet decorated with SPQR label is placed on the bottom of the statue.
